My partner and I have chosen a ring and it is a matter of time before I ask her to marry me. However, she has not divorced from her previous marriage. Is it 'right' to be engaged without being divorced from your last marriage or should I wait till the divorce is done.

I would wait for the divorce to come through. It's unseemly for you to be engaged to a married woman.

The natural response should be to wait until the divorce is final, but then I'd be calling myself a hypocrit. My fiance and I were engaged for 5 months before my divorce became final. Let me add that I had been separated for over 2 years and was having trouble locating my ex to get the papers signed..

I would wait until she is divorced. Even though she no longer wants to be with her ex she will still probably go through some emotions when the divorce does come through, and she might feel pressured if you give her the ring so soon.Let her know how much you do love her though and that you plan to marry her one day :)

It's up to you, the marriage has obviously well and truly ended or she would not be with you. I am in this situation as well and we have both decided it is not appropriate for us to get engaged til the divorce is final but that's just how we feel, if you feel it is the right thing for you to do then I see no reason why you should not propose to her.

Instead of an engagement ring try a promise ring. Means the same thing without anyone thinking you are engaged to a married woman! Congrats and good luck!

as long as the papers are filed, i would say it would be ok. but if she is just seperated and no papers filed then i say dont do it yet. wait till the divorce is final to get married. her ex has probably already moved on too, so why not get engaged. but no matter what anyone tells you on here you have to do what is right for you.

It's not right to date when you are not single.
Therefore, it's not right to be going steady.
Or getting engaged.
Or wearing an engagement ring.

Have some respect for the institution of marriage and for the people involved! I mean, you're interested in getting married to this person, right? How little does marriage mean to you if you're crowding an affair onto it?

you should wait for the divorce to be final. One thing should be completely ended before beginning something new. I don't think that would start your marriage off to a good start.

It depends. If the divorce has been filed, and you are just in the waiting period, it shouldn't be a problem. If she hasn't even gotten the paperwork in, then she doesn't deserve your ring until she does right by you.

If your a religious person then you should wait until the divorce is final. If not..its your personal business.
