Many have answered this somewhat accurately. They were told not to eat of the fruit, but the serpent (Satan) tricked Eve into eating and she gave the fruit to Adam who knew it was wrong but because he loved Eve ate anyway.
There was no sin in the world at that time but Adam and Eve's eyes were opened to see the torments of sin. They themselves sinned only in doing what God had requested they not eat; but He also gave them freewill.
Because sin requires a blood sacrifice God killed animals as a substitute for their sin. He then took the skins and made clothing to protect them from the cold they would be encountering outside the garden. God had no problem with their nudity, but He knew they would freeze once they were taken from the garden.
Blood sacrifices were done for many thousands of years until God brought His Son to earth through Mary. Jesus had to be in physical human form to defeat Satan on the cross. Because God had given the earth to physical man it took a physical man to take it back. God never betrays his word...ever.

They did know, they were told they could eat anything but the fruit from the tree of knowledge, and they were persuaded even though they knew what they had been told (just like a child who is told don't do that, but the child tries anyway at least once until he or she is punished - the punishment comes regardless if they know why, as they disobeyed). What they did NOT know was that they were naked, but that came to them after the fruit of knowledge was eaten - which then made them afraid and they began their own punishment as well as the one their maker gave to them when he tossed them out of the garden and put a guard around the tree. The snake gets a bad rap now because the one who talked the woman into it took on the form of a serpent - who btw had legs until he was punished for his part in the situation by having them taken away and then being told man would always despise him for what he had done.

they started the first sin
God specifically told them not to eat the fruit off that one specific tree in the beginning so Adam and Eve knew better than to eat that fruit
there was no sin but they commited the first sin called original sin and were punished by being cast out of that wonderful garden

if u read the bible u will find they did know it was wrong, God told them they could have what ever they wanted in the garden of eden but they could not touch the forbidden fruit. which was when the serpent aka the devil told them that god was lying to them so Adam and Eve believed him and gave into temptation and ate the fruit, that was a sin told to them by God thats why they were punished.

You are confusing ignorance of concepts of good end evil with a hierchy of the latter, where sins are the highest level. Besides, the only thing that needed to be known was that the eating of the fruit in question was forbidden. The moral basis for that is not necessary. Put simply, it was god's will they not do it. They did. he made them pay.

It was test, one commandment, Do not eat from the tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil!
Adam and Eve had to keep themselves perfect and not sin! They Failed! All of the Human Race is condemned!
Jesus, the second Adam, kept himself perfect and did not sin. And if we believe in Him that we are identified with him have eternal life forever.
If I had a choice to live like Adam in the Garden and try to keep myself perfect everyday. Or be condemned only to be saved by another, and grow in God's Grace and Knowlege without the worry of sin or condemnation. I'd pick the later.

First of all, they did know that they shouldn't eat of the fruit, because God told them they shouldn't. Secondly, they were not punished - they were infected by self-will, egoism, which is the virus that caused sin and death to come into the world. They stopped living in full communion with God and began to rely on their own will, their own powers and thereby became dependent on material and created things. Their exile from Paradise was a self-exile; but even so, rather than being a punishment, even that was a blessing from God because by allowing them to fall out of Paradise, He gave them a chance to see their mistake and turn back to Him. Otherwise, they could have lived in their depraved condition forever and never turned back to Him, which is the same thing as Hell. God did not punish them - He did everything possible to save them, even sacrificing Himself in the process.

thats not why they were punished, they were punished because after they ate the fruit they knew right from wrong but they decided to hide themselves from God, and that was a sin. think about it, if you screw up an hide it and say the person you were hiding it from finds out from somebody other then you, then wouldnt they be madder then if you had come to them with the truth in the first place? after Adam and Eves eyes where opened they knew that hiding wasnt going to solve the problem but only make it worse, but they did it anyways. God even gave them the chance to come to him by walking in the garden and asking, "Where Are You?", it wasnt that he didnt know where they were, he knew they were behind the third tree on the left side of the main rode through eden. by hiding that shows that they knew that what they had done was wrong, and that they were ashamed. so you see? their punishment although harsh, was neccesary, because God had told them that by eating of that fruit they would surly die, death was the punishment, and everything else is part of the life we live untill death claims our souls, and we depart to our eternity. after that God shed the blood of a lamb to cover their nudity, or sin. this is in essence like when his son shed his blood and life for the sins of the world. this way and only this way we are forgiven. and only through faith and believing in the one true God and his Son, Jesus Christ. and a life sought after seeking the truths and who Christ is.

they did know it was wrong. they knew when God told them not to eat of the tree.
they were punished by being removed from the garden, God put angels with flaming swords at the entrance of the garden to prevent them from coming back. after that they no longer just ate whatever they wanted, they had to WORK for their food, before then, they didn't, it just grew and didn't require anything to make it fruitful. they were never designed to die, until that day. and because of their sin, and us being from them, we now die, we get sick, we have to work to eat.
why were they punished? because God is a holy God, he cannot tolerate sin of any kind. if he could he wouldn't be holy. when they sinned, God made the first sacrifice for their sins, he killed an animal to clothe Adam and Eve.

It wasn't just Adam and Eve who were punished it was all humans forever. Women supposedly have great pain during child birth to this day as part of that punishment.
The question I have is about the culpability of God. God is effectively the parental figure for Adam and Eve. After all if a 12 year old boy shoots someone, one of the first questions is what were the parents thinking and doing.
So God creates two humans who don't have the advantage of being raised by a loving family. Everything they knew such as how to go to the bathroom, how to eat, how to speak was pre-programmed by God Himself. God knew as soon as He created them that they would sin. They behaved exactly as God had designed them. Yet He chose to punish them and all of us for eating a piece of fruit.
It's pretty messed up when you think about it.
