it says "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file" tell me what to do.

Download the K-lite mega codec pack. It has all the codec's you'll ever need. =)

Yes, you might be missing a codec. To see which codec is needed to play the file download a program called Gspot.

after downloading extract and open the main exe. Goto FILE and open you video file by browsing to it. After that it will tell you what codecs are required for sound and video playback.

There are a few other reasons video's wont play even if you have the correct codecs installed. Certain key information isnide the video file might be damaged. In some instances the video might have been edited and doesn't start with a key frame, in which case you need to edit the first bit out.

If it's a divx file then you can fix errors in the stream by rebuilding the index with a program called DivFix.

1.right click on the file
2.press error details
3.press web help
4.you should be able to take it from there.
