Tell them to adopt.
June is adopt a shelter cat month.
You'll be saving a life, and the cat will be spayed/neutered (in most cases), and up to date on the vaccinations. Any health problems will be noted.
Companionship is a major plus.

I own two cats, and I can tell you that having cats enriches your life. And I'm not some crazy cat lady, just a sophmorein college. First of all, millions of cats are euthanized yearly due to overpopulation (due to irresponsible pet ownership). So save a life adopt a shelter cat. If you go to a good shelter, you will find that shelter cats are often well socialized (being around many people and cats) and should already be spayed or neutered. If you get any cat, make sure they get fixed! It's good for you, your pet, and the community, bottom line.

But back to why, cats are great. They are independent and relatively low maintanance. Just need a fresh litter box, food, and water left out all the time. Cats should live exclusivley inside, and this is easy as well, as they don't get in fights with other cats, bring in fleas, or are exposed to illness.

Cats love to play. They form strong bonds with their owners. They will sleep with you if you let them. They are a joy to watch. Cats are also very intelligent. Being independent, they can't be trained to do tricks, but see how fast they learn the sound of a can opener or you coming home. Cats are very affectionate as well, and there is nothing better than having a purring feline friend by your side.

I would also reccomend you get two cats (as kittens, or adults who know each other). Then you can also experience the joys of how cats interact and form relationships with each other.

I can't adequately put into words how having cats greatly ameliorates your life, but it does. Cats are marvelous animals. Adopt one (or two) soon.

Start doing things to help your parents out without being asked or asking for any rewards. Show them that you are responsible.

Do a lot of research on cat behavior and what it really takes to maintain the health and happiness of a cat. Cats can live for over 20 years, are you ready for that kind of commitment?
If you are, and you have done your research, can you pay for the cat yourself?

If you get a cat, you are responsible for it for the rest of it's life. Think seriously about that. You have to feed it good food, give it clean water, pay for regular vet visits, they need shots once a year. They need a lot of care and attention.

I suggest calling a vet's office and finding out how much it will cost you every year to take care of your cat.

If you still want a cat after all of your research, I say good choice!
Present the information to your parents, tell them you can pay for the cat and are willing to take full responsibility. Including when you grow up and move away that you will take the cat with you.

Good luck!

If they still haven't got any cats this is what I think: Cats are very good companions, they have sweet temperaments(if they haven't had any trauma as kittens), reliable, clean and don't slobber all over you like dogs do. They also have a very refined nature and are very independent without being anti-social(again only if they have had a happy kitten-hood). They are intelligent and very affectionate, as I say without the drool...unless you have a sixteen year old cat whose fangs have gone and then in purring there is a bit. But don't let that put you off as that is just my cat and not all sixteen year old cats do this-that I'm aware. Get them some cat books, if you haven't already. And my your family have many blissful years with what ever cat or cats they bring into their lives!

1) It's good for elderly people because cats can like...it's good for your heart. What I'm saying is that when you have cats, then it's good for you heart. It sounds weird, yes but I'm serious. And no, I don't mean eating it!
2) They are cute and adorable
3) Cats have been found to relieve stress and are great companions
4) They entertain us with their peculiar antics and curiosity
5) Kittens and cats are small, therefore they are easy to carry around.
6) Many owners let their cats outside and they can sometimes come back with their own food.
7) Cats use litterboxes, which means that you don't have to take them out to go to the bathroom and all you have to do is to clean the litterbox.
8) They are usually less-agressive than dogs and they barely bite.
9) Cats and kittens do not bark which means they won't wake up other apartment neighbors and such.
10) Your cat medical bills will not cost as much as your dogs'.
11) Kittens do not need exercise as much as dogs. They will do whatever they want to do.
12) They groom themselves--they wash themselves so you don't need to shower them as much as dogs. In fact, you probably don't need to shower them at all if they're indoor cats!
13) Kittens and cats love to chase things so if you don't like killing bugs, they can kill it for you. And they also catch mice too and other small bugs and rodents.
14) Cats can be like another family member, or take place of another family member that has passed away before.
15) Cats are fairy independent animals, alhtough they welcome your attention and love to be pet and groomed
16) Cats are less costly than dogs
17) Cats require minimum training
18) Cats can live in smaller places like apartments and condos
-

I hope they get a cat!! And when they do, I know they'll enjoy their cat/kitten! Remember to ADOPT their kitten or cat because they're MUCH cheaper, and they already had their shots AND because they need you!

Cats are independent creatures. They Don't need to be walked (like a dog) they use litter pan. They are pretty clean animals. They'll catch mice in the house. They show great love to you. They could (if necessary) be left alone for a couple of days if you leave out food and water (best to have someone do that)
( Tell your parents you dying and the kitten will save your life) LOL

I thought long and hard when I wanted a pet. I chose a cat.
I also specifically chose a siamese. They are talkers - very vocal.
if you like that its really cool. They have a sound for everything
they do! I can call mine and he will utter this funny sound and
come running! (mostly to get a treat!) they are easy to train - I
taught mine how to sit up like a dog & beg when he wants a treat.
I used a piece of cheese! works everytime!
They are beautiful cats - ice blue eyes, and their coloring is just
great - I have a seal point, his head, tail, legs, back are all a dark
brown, while the rest of him is a cream color. He is not a show
cat, just a pet. They are very loyal and much company. I live
alone & I can't wait to see him when I come home!

If I had to choose a cat - he's the one I'd want! Siamese are
just great!

Don't pay for a cat, trust me, there are tons of people in this world that have tons of kittens they need to find good homes for (my boyfriend's family currently has 14 kittens that are really crowding up the porch, lol). Look in your local newspaper and on bulletin boards for free kitten giveaways. Tell your parents they're free, they might just think that paying for a cat might not be worth it. But, save up some money to get them their shots. You probably want to get any females spayed unless you want truckloads of babies in a few months.

Cats are really great pets, they're a lot lower maintenance than dogs (virtually take care of themselves, aside from scooping the litter box and feeding them and giving them water of course). They only stink up your house if you don't change their litter enough, and they themselves don't stink. They usually keep to themselves, but can be extremely lovable, and they're fun to play with and watch.

Cats are very easy to care for. There are no walks involved or taking the kitty outside to potty in the rain or snow. They are more independant, and usually don't go haywire if you need to leave for a few hours. And I have had cats that acted like dogs. Such as fetching, coming when their name is called, following me everywhere, talking to me, cuddling, and sleeping with me. It is a great first pet, and it took me awhile to get my parents to relent when I was young. It was a positive change in all our lives and we had many sweet, loving, and funny memories of our first house cat!! My fingers are crossed for you!!!

Having a pet around oneself is beneficial to decreasing blood pressure;
stroking a pet is calming to one's nerves;
undertaking the care and feeding of a pet - in this case a cat - instills a sense of responsibility in young people;
cats give love and affection unquestioningly to those who are kind to them;
cats purr and emit a lot of heat, both of which are soothing to shut-ins, children, the elderly;
cats in the house make vermin - rats, mice, voles - move elsewhere.

This ought to be enough to convince them.

Don't bother getting a pedigreed animal - find a lovely, lonely cat at a shelter and give it love & kindness and it will reciprocate tenfold.
