Bedford Stuyvesant and East New York are definitely 2 areas that you should avoid. I believe that Crown Heights is also "bad".

Brooklyn Heights is the safest and you can see Manhattan across the East River. However, it's expensive. Flatbush area adjacent to Bklyn Hts is also good. Park Slope is great too. Prospect Heights is OK as long as it's the area that faces Brooklyn Museum and Bklyn Botanical Gardens. Williamsburg was inexpensive when the artists discovered it, now it's less affordable but very safe.

I'd say the more south you go within Brooklyn, the better off you'd be safety wise. Portions of 'Red Hook' could be rough, but down by Bay Ridge it gets pretty nice; thats down by the Verrazano Bridge.

Brooklyn is a real big place....your money for rent will determine where you will be living. Real estate and rentals are getting expensive. You might want to look in queens,,,,,,
