In general, anti-epileptic drugs can interfere with Vitamin D status and bone density. Valproic acid seems to be less problematic in this regard than many other drugs in this group.

However, Vitamin D insufficiency is at epidemic levels. Many vitamin D researchers now recommend annual vitamin D testing as a part of an 'annual physical'. These same researchers also recommend supplementation at much higher doses than the clearly inadequate RDA for vitamin D. R. Vieth at the University of Toronto, Robert Heaney at Creighton Medical School, and Michael Holick of Boston University recommend at least 1000 to 2000 IU's per day for the maintenance of bone health.

Best wishes and good luck.

The information says nothing about this vitamin D deficiency but does suggest taking supplemental folic acid. Most common Vit D deficiiency is from not drinking any milk and not going out in the sun which are the 2 main natural sources.
