Do you really think anyone on Yahoo Answers has the answer to what many philosphers have been trying to figure out for thousands of years? Ehh... I'll try.
I have spent countless nights trying to get some sort of answer myself. It's really hard for me accept that there is a God though. Either that, or it's hard for me to accept the God that my parents tried to drill into to my head since I was a baby. (They are fundamentalist Christians by the way. the outrageous ideas make me sad that there are more people out there like them.)
I think there might a God because it seems very unlikely that such a complex life could have happened by accident, or by an explosion of matter. The way that DNA is constructed, cells, and just the way that the human body functions seems all too perfect for it to happen by some random chance.
However, I as I said before, I don't know if I could ever believe in the Catholic or Christian God. Supposedly, God is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent. That means he is all-good, all-knowing, and all-powerful. I'm sure that you are well aware of the sorrow, suffering and pain that a billion people feel every day due to war, starvation, genocide, poverty, and most importantly evil. If God was all-good, he would not allow this to happen. If God is all-good, but he can't stop it, that means he is not all-powerful. If said God is not all-powerul, then he cannot be God.
God cannot be omnicent or all-knowing, because humans have free will, and those two are contridictory. One might argue that everything needs a creator. Even the Universe. Something cannot create itself. So God created the universe, but who or what created God?
Perhaps there is a God, but it is likely that all of those rules, and dogmatic views that Christians teach is not accurate. The texts of the Bible have been PROVEN to be altered by numerous kings, who put into it what they wanted. Similar to how George W. Bush is running the country based on his morals. I don't know, you decide.
The answer will probably never be solved, and people will always be kept wondering. I believe in God, but I don't believe in organized religion.
Read this, you would find it interesting. It's a converstaion between an ordinary man and God. Good read.

There really is a God: One God. There is a lot of evidence to show that God exists. For instance, what is it that draws us to believe in some sort of all-intelligent, all-powerful being? Why are people who believe in God statistically happier and healthier? Why is there so much that science cannot explain, and why does it seem that, the more science discovers, the more questions we have? What gives so many Catholic priests the ability to be celibate and live their lives for others when everything the world tells us says that such a lifestyle is pure craziness?
What makes God God is that He is perfect. The thing that makes each person unique is his or her own perfections and imperfections: what makes you different from me is that (among other things) you can do things that I can not. If there was an all-perfect being, there must only be one. How would we be able to tell one god from another if we weren't able to see that one has things or can do things that the other can't? So, then, if we are able to make distinctions between gods, they obviously wouldn't be perfect, as there are qualities of one that the other does not have. Therefore, if you can understand my meaning, if a religion is to claim to have a perfect God, then there must only be one God.
It is unfortunate that there are so many different religions, but the reason that there are so many is that there are so many different understandings of God. Of course, they can't all be right, but they should all be respected since they are all attempts of coming closer to the same God that the Catholic Church teaches.
I'm glad to see that you're asking these questions. One of the problems today is that people aren't learning enough about the faith. They don't know what they believe and why they believe what they do. It may help you to find a good Catholic priest who can answer your questions and help you to grow in faith. Don't forget to pray: prayer is your opportunity to encounter the living God. Also, don't stop asking! Keep asking until you get the answer you need! God bless, and good luck!

In response to the above answer...
Yeah saying "there is a lot of evidence showing that God exists" doesn't really help your case, when you don't supply the evidence.
As to what draws us to believe in God, well that is imple. People have alwsy been looking for an answer to what they don't know, as is the asker here. They make things up to answer those questions for themselves. That is why other "inferior" cultures worshipped the "rain god" who made it rain, and the "sun god" who made the sun shine, etc. They wanted to know why the sun shone, or why it rained, and that was their comfort. I'm glad we have moved ahead so far now. Instead of worshipping pigs, sun gods, cows, etc. we know worship a carpentar who lived 2000 years ago!
"Why are people who believe in God statistically happier and healthier?"
What stats? I don't believe in God, and I am perfectly happy. That is a situation by situation basis and is irrelevant.
"Why is there so much that science cannot explain, and why does it seem that, the more science discovers, the more questions we have?"
Actually there is a lot more that religion doesn't explain. Liek, I don't know...prove there is a God? If you can't do that, and you haven't done it yet, don't even talk about how sciene can't answer questions. Whenever christians are posed with a question, the answer is "Well, the bible says so."
"What gives so many Catholic priests the ability to be celibate and live their lives for others when everything the world tells us says that such a lifestyle is pure craziness?"
If you are going to use blanket statements saying that "many" cathloic priests are happier and live their lives for others. I'll say , Why is it that "many" catholic priests rape children? Must be God, or their celibacy. Nice false logic there.
"What makes God God is that He is perfect. Therefore, if you can understand my meaning, if a religion is to claim to have a perfect God, then there must only be one God."
This whole paragraph is just rambling nonsense. Doesn't prove any point.
"Of course, they can't all be right, but they should all be respected since they are all attempts of coming closer to the same God that the Catholic Church teaches."
That is probably one of the worst statements I have ever heard. All religions are just a way of coming closer to the catholic God? What are you? Stephen Colbert? Sheer ignorance.
"Don't forget to pray: prayer is your opportunity to encounter the living God. Also, don't stop asking! Keep asking until you get the answer you need! God bless, and good luck!"
Actually, since you love "statistics" so much, it has been shown that orayer works .000001% of the time.
Have fun living in a world of ignorance dude!

There are bound to be many religions in the world because people are always ready to ‘worship’ in ways which they have designed for themselves, regardless of whether these methods of worship lead them to really feel or know God.
Down the centuries people have invented numerous gods and religions. But what is the point of bowing down to lifeless statues, like the great stone beetles which were often used in the ancient east? What is the point? Why do people do it? For if we make gods ourselves, we know that they have no life, and any divine aura around them is merely projected from superstitious imaginations.
One reason is - because many want a religion without God. It sounds strange, but it is a fact.
The human race is really against God - this is the clear teaching of the Bible from cover to cover. We want to run our own lives and have whatever we can get. We do not want to give up our sins and serve our Creator.
And yet, there are times when we feel scared, or uneasy and insecure. At such times we want a religion that can take away the fear of death and give some sort of security beyond the grave. If religions can be devised which will do this and require very little from people, then they will always find supporters. We call such religions - religions of convenience. Many such religions thrive by selling eternal safety and security at acceptably low prices.
Even the Christian religion has been adapted and altered into a religion of convenience by some of its clergy and ministers. Some of these clergy have rewritten traditional, biblical Christianity and turned it into something entirely different to produce a religion of convenience.

Okay, well I can answer the question from my own religious perspective if that is what you are asking. However, in truth, only you can answer what you believe. Do you think there is a God? What do you mean by the word God? What is the nature of God? How do you experience God?
As a Hindu I believe there is a God. I believe that ultimately God is one, but some may experience God as many. There are a lot of different religions in the world because God is big, vast, and infinite and we exist in small finite bodies. Hindus say that the different religions of the world are just different perspectives on the same thing: God. "There is one God though humanity calls it by many different names." -Rig Veda 1:164.46
There is a story that Hindus use to reflect their belief on this. It goes:
There are six blind men who each leave their village. While walking in the forest each of them has an elephant come across their path that they get to experience only briefly. The first blind man reaches out and feels only the trunk. The second blind man on his way through the forest reaches out and touches the flapping ears of the elephant that is walking past him. The third blind man is only able to touch the elephants tell. The fourth blind man is only able to touch the big body of the elephant. The fifth blind man can only touch one of it's legs. And the sixth blind man reaches out and touches on the tusks. Each of the six blind men go back to their individual villages. There they tell the others about the elephant (whom none in the village have ever seen). They each describe their brief experience of the elephant. So, which blind man is right about the elephant?
Hindus say that we are like those blind men and the elephant is like God. We each have opportunities in life and through spiritual practices to experience God, but each of us experiences God differently. We each touch a different part of God.
Thus as the Hindus say "the many religions of the world are just a different perspective on the same thing and all of them should be respected equally."
And that is what I believe.
Peace be with you.

Yes there is really a God, and only one God.
There are many religion,s cause people say things like " There are too many questions, with not enough legitimate answers surrounding religion for my liking." God set things up his way not for the the liking of others, People keep changing what he has said or what he asks us to do. The bible is our guide, and you can see if the man made faiths are following his will or not by comparing them to what is written in the new testament, have they added or taked away from what is there.
But beliving in God is the first step.

Get a group of 100 people to stand in front of the same painting.
Then ask each to explain what he/she feels when looking at it, and what they think is the meaning of it. You will get many very different answers. Why? Isn't it only one painting?
In the same way, each religion began with perceptions colored by the culture and times of those who first practiced it. Are they all the same? Unfortunately, some are quite false. But many others are simply the same religion as perceived at different times and different places.

well, you can look at it in a myriad of ways.
one would be to assume that people interpret one thing in a variety of ways and therefor all the different gods are just one in the same.
another would be to assume that there is no god and that people tend to create or give power to other figures that will help to judge and protect them thereby decreasing the need for self preservation.
and yet another would be to think that perhaps gods were created to answer questions that were unanswerable by the level of technological advancement at the time.
there are many ways of answering your question, i hope i have helped shed some light on a few answers.

There is only one true God.. there are so many religions everywhere because people want to have their own ways to get close to God.
God exists and He blesses all the believers - called Christians, although there are commandments that have to be followed. But some people create their own gods because they do not want to obey God's commandments and have their own way instead.
Still and all the goal is the same - to worship a Supreme Being. In short, there is Someone who is all powerful, all knowing, and all present - who is GOD.

Mimi, you love God and you tell me everything about God in your dream and the bible he opened for you when you're 7 or 8 years old.Lucky girl of you!For my opinion, there is only 1 God.The more human in the world, the more rumors came out and more religion cames. But you don't need to know how many God are there, you just got to trust that there is only one powerful God in the universe. He love we all and he love you too.Even if you did sins,he forgive you but not to those who done mortal sins, that is bad.
