Don't think there was torchering going on in the catacombs. I think those are the "dungeons" you are refering to. Popes, Cardinals, Bishops & priest sometimes sought refuge there in war time or when Catholics were being persecuted. And also used some for entombment of deceased higherarchy.
The catacombs aren't unlike those secret passages beneath the White House & Pentagon & were built for the same purpose.
Steve E didn't mention that the torture chambers during the Spanish Inquisition was a product of Spain's controversal Catholics. They were not Roman Catholics & it was the only time in history when there were two seperate popes, each claiming heirship to the Catholic Church.

OOOOoooooooooooooooo! I don't know--that is freaky.. I know that a lot of churches back in the days of the Black plague --tortured all different people who they thought caused it--even the priests. I saw that on the history channel the other night. But I am not sure about the dungeons being under the church. Now that would be interesting to find out!!!!!!!!

The old churches had CRYPTS under them. That is where priests, nuns and the wealthy would be buried.
Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in Los Angeles- brand spanking new church- has them....they are absolutely gorgeous.

No, non-believers were tortured outside the churches; only believers were tortured *inside* the churches

Many myths prevail-- but I wouldn't be surprised if there were still some dungeons left over from the Inquisitions..

I wouldn't be surprised if this were true. During the middle ages and on into the renaissance period, the church did some awful things. Thats why we say, "Don't make me get MEDIEVAL on you!"
Hope this helps!
