Consumer Reports has said, according to their Safety Assessment Report, that among small cars, the Honda Civic consistently earns high marks for safety as does the Volkswagen Passat. Both are pretty nice looking cars as well and they seem to have good repair records as do Honda minivans and Toyota Rav 4's.
Check out Edmunds.com and Kelly Bluebook for the price you should pay in your zip code for the car you want. Take your figures with you when you go to buy your car, it will give you the right price to bargain for. And be sure to use CarFax to check out the VIN number to learn about the car's history and to be sure it hasn't been in a crash or a hurricane. Hope this information is helpful to you. This is what I do when I buy a car.

Cute car, great fun to drive and most definitely safe - Volkswagen Cabrio, used convertible with built-in roll-bar. Check out a VW dealer - 2001-2002 should be around 7K. Great cars. Had one, gave it up only because the child-safety seat took up too much room in the backseat.

Honda del Sol! They're running between 3K and 5K Bluebook.
Convertable, two seater, sporty looking that's pretty dependable. My insurance company doesn't rate it as a "sports car" but as a compact, which will get you typical rates for a Civic.
Standard airbags and re-inforced cage (for the targa top). The d15, d16 engines are good for overall enconomy driving.
Plus, they're fun to drive!

Volvo V70, Mercedes Benz 300D, BMW M5, Buick Century, Cadillac DeVille, Cadillac Eldorado, Mercedes C230, Cheverolet Caprice Classic, or anything that was made by Bently before 1990, Rolls Royce Silver Cloud's are nice. yesterday, i purchased a 1991 Rolls Royce Silver Spur, and that'd be a nice one for you a little later.

Mitsubishi Eclipse, Honda Accord or Civic. The best way I have found to find a used car is on AutoExtra.com. You put in the make, model, the amount you want to spend and your zip code. It does a great job of finding several vehicles to chose from and how to contact the seller.

A mid to late 90's Honda Accord is very stylish and gets very good gas mileage. And you should be able to find one in that price range. Good Luck
