This is a very good story in the bible, David and Jonathan were not sexual lovers. They were best friends and would do almost anything for one another. David is called a man after Gods own heart.

Some have looked at this verse and suggested that David and Jonathan were lovers; however, there is really nothing in the Scriptures to indicate that they were anything more than close friends.

We have difficulty understanding that two men might have a close relationship because our culture is homophobic to the degree that men are discouraged from experiencing close friendships with other men -- it's too bad!

David is refered to in the Bible as a man after God's heart. I doubt if he would maintain a homosexual relationship knowing that it is clearly against God's law. No. they were not lovers. They were very close friends He needed the guidance, and protection of God because Saul ,Jonathan's father was after his life. At such an early stage in his ministry he could not afford to be disconnected from communication with God. He dared not because he knows the consequences would be that he be handed over to his enemy, Saul on a silver platter therefore it is most unlikely that he was having a relationship odious to God.

No, they were the best of friends and not lovers (not homosexual). If they were homosexuals, they wouldn't be in love with women and have kids later on.

I guess most men nowadays do not have quality friendships with other men, so that's why people look at the story of Jonathan and David in a very twisted manner.

David and Jonathon were best buddies. They were also in laws. But most of all they were fellow soldiers. Only a soldier can understand the bond that combat developes between men. You see the other guy in all kinds of awful circumstances and vice vresa. After the batlle is over, you,ve had the opportunity to see the man react at his worst, and he has seen your emotions and character. You both liked what you saw and deep respect and trust well up inside you both. This is something this uncommitted, selfish, milk toast, soft generation can never understand.

Two timeless examples of friendship in the Bible are that of Jonathan and David and of Ruth and Naomi. They were based on a shared devotion to God and to his principles. Significantly, in both cases the friendship transcended great differences in age and background. They thus teach us something else about friendship: Young ones and older ones have much to offer one another as friends.

At one point, David says that his love for Jonathan "surpasses that of women." Guys, go tell that to your best buddies and see how they react.

NO THEY WERE BLOOD BROTHERS. THEY HAD A BLOOD COVENANT BETWEEN DAVID AND HIS FAMILY AND JONATHAN AND HIS FAMILY.

1 SAMUEL 18 [FROM THE MESSAGE]

1 By the time David had finished reporting to Saul, Jonathan was deeply impressed with David - an immediate bond was forged between them. He became totally committed to David. From that point on he would be David's number-one advocate and friend. 2 Saul received David into his own household that day, no more to return to the home of his father. 3 Jonathan, out of his deep love for David, made a covenant with him. 4 He formalized it with solemn gifts: his own royal robe and weapons - armor, sword, bow, and belt. 5 Whatever Saul gave David to do, he did it - and did it well. So well that Saul put him in charge of his military operations. Everybody, both the people in general and Saul's servants, approved of and admired David's leadership.

I SAMUEL 18 [KJV]

1 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 2 And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house. 3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. 4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle. 5 And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's servants.
