the trick is to be able to hold all your hair in 1 hand so the other hand is free to grab more hair. Put your thumbs at the top of your ears and pull this hair to the top of your head (like a high ponytail) seperate this into 3 even portions and braid 1 time, make sure you are smoothing portions as you go. Now hold all 3 portions in your left hand (this takes practice). With your right thumb go back over to your right ear and get a small portion of hair add it to the portion on the right side of head, braid that to the middle. now hold all hair with right hand and use left thumb to get more hair from over left ear, braid to middle. Keep doing this until all hair is used, tie off with rubber band. Don't give up it takes alot of practice.

Here is a web site that looks pretty informative. Basically you take 3 strands of hair, begin to braid and add hair into each piece of hair you cross over.

The way I learned was I had friends than could, and I watched them and then had them walk me through it. It helps to have a friend with long hair to practice on. It took longer to learn how to french braid my own hair.
