I am a Catholic, yet I do not know the reason behind this. What is up with burying the poor dude?

All the burying of St Joseph...or putting him upside down or what ever...is silly superstition....
We Catholics believe St Joseph is the patron and protector of the home and the family ( and of fathers). This is by virtue of his role as protector of Mary and Jesus.
I usually park him on the mantel when we are selling-and take him to our next home with us. Of course, you say a prayer asking him to pray for the best for your family, too.
Once we had our house on the market, and it wouldn't sell- it was nearly a year. My husband ( non Catholic) was ridiculing me about the prayers for St Joseph's intercession....you know what? If we had moved it would have been a complete disaster for my family! it would have been a cross country move to where we had no family, and facing a crisis of unbelievable proportion.
It was best we stayed put.

Honestly, I do not know why many things are done by Catholics.
The bible tells us with the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, that the curtain has been torn down. We no longer need a middleman.
We can go directly to GOD in Jesus name.
Maybe they have held on to this old testmant way of doing things, because it has become habit. Not sure, but I am sure that it is not needed, and could very will be seen by GOD as worshipping other GODS, pray to GOD and GOD alone.

I dont know the answer to why they bury him in the back yard upside down...but Catholic people have a lot of different saints they pray to for different things.

That poop dodnt klnow that all True Christians are already saints.
That pood din not know that Christians are to Pray to GOD by way of Jesus ONLY - don't even need HIS earthly mom!
That poop wasn't much of a christian, let alone a TRUE CHRISTIAN!

Why would anyone pray to God like He's a vending machine? God's greater plan can't be jacked around with by someone who thinks they know better (don't they always)?

I don't have any idea where the Catholics based that ritual. It' doesn't have anything to do with salvation.
