Why do people keep discussing the speed of cars when they are asked if it is a good one. There is no autobahn in the states so you are not going to legally drive over a certain limit and I don't know what it is but it is well below 180 or 190 mph. So I am afraid I am missing something.....

No: speed is NOT important to intellegent car buyers. High crash/ safety scores and gas mileage (both for very good reasons) are more a car shopping priority today. Find a vehicle that offers both, and you have a winner.

Yes, speed limits in the U.S. are WELL below 180 m.p.h. On average, they don't exceed 65-70 m.p.h.

As for the guy driving the high priced foreign super-speed car, I have this to offer: "Do 180 m.p.h. on ANY highway, where a small deer or rabbit comes out in front of you--what do YOU think your chances are? Think about this before you answer: your car's gull-wing door weighs about 2 pounds." Suddenly, I don't envy the supercar owner and am content driving me compact car.

Your premise is logic. Since the maximum speed is "capped" by speed limits, the maximum speed of a car should not be the most important factor when purchasing one. It is still possible to drive as fast as you please in the U.S. in private, closed, courses but those are special situations. Those who enjoy the thrill of driving their cars in a "sporty" manner would perhaps benefit more by choosing cars with greater acceleration capabilities, that is cars with high horse power to weight ratio. This will provide the "stick your body to the car seat" when you press the gas pedal deep.

Speed may be illegal over 70 mph, but that doesn't mean we people in the states don't break the law to see how fast our vehicles can push it---lol!

I prefer to not run my vehicle or computer or air conditioner or anything else at maximum capability.

If you run your computer at 95% of it's theoretical power, it is going to wear out sooner from overuse.

If you have a car that can only go 80mph and drive it at 75mph all day, it is going to wear out faster than a car that is designed to go 160mph.

If the car is safe at 160, then it is definitely going to be more safe at 70 than a car that isn't designed to go more than 100mph.

At least that's my theory.

Aside from that, fast cars are better. I'm not compensating for anything, no sir...

speed only should matter if you are buying a car for a kid to drive.
I think giving a new driver a very fast car is a moral blunder of epic proportions.
Umm I digress and a lot of dumb adults as well.
I think the amount of flowers and wreaths around telephone poles and trees can attest to what I am saying here.
