A hernia is when the muscle and inner lining of your stomach and lower abdomen get torn, and the intestines sort of push through the torn opening. Usually due to a sports injury, or heavy lifting when a person is a little out of shape in the mid section, or sometimes when a woman is pregnant a small hernia can happen. The surgery to fix this is to basically go in there and push the guts back in, and sew the tear shut. Nice Huh?

a hernia is a projection of an organ through an abnormal opening in the muscle wall, usually in the stomach. For example, the abdominal lining may develop a tear which would allow the intestines to seep out and make a bulge under the skin. They can happen in different areas.

Basically it's a weakening in the stomach wall that allows the intestine to bulge through.
