I used to bartend at a restaurant and all you really need is the bartending recipe book, practice and find a job that will be willing to allow you to learn as you earn. Since I was a good server at this restaurant, I proved that I could handle the hectic crowds, etc. One thing is responsbility, you owe it to the drinkers out there to be genuinely concerned about their health and more importantly their safety. That is a huge responsiblity to carry, so don't take it lightly. You will still have to get your bartending permit (according to state law). I am in GA.

In my twelve years as a bartender, I have found that the ones from the bartending schools tend to work out the least. Many times the bars will promote from within.

NO it's a total waste of time & money. You can learn the same stuff bar backing or as a waiter at a fun resteraunt. In both cases you can play around after hours &/or cover for batenders here & there. In both cases you're likely to be promoted from within before they hire someone that's totally unknown & unproven. I don't know about other states, but Texas is just a TABC license, which is the same thing waiters & sometimes even grocery clercks have to take. It's super easy, online, & they prep you for it.
