First of all, I'd emphasize the fact that you love her and that you're only discussing this with her because you don't want to lose her. If you still live with her, be a good model and go for walks, drink diet sodas instead of regular, and perhaps offer to cook dinners. Is your mom alone often? She may be lonely or bored, so maybe the two of you could do some activities together like dance class, yoga class, aerobics, or swimming. You don't have to stick with something that turns out boring, so find your niche. As for the smoking, perhaps having her talk to her doctor would help. There's actually a medication called Zyban that helps a lot with the depression and cravings people get when they try to quit but it's prescription only. Also, if she's alone, cooking for one can be annoying. Help her find some easy but healthy recipes so that she doesn't feel like she's wasting time. Good luck!

There is more to quitting doing something than just saying, "I quit," unfortunately. People live a long time if they are happy. The body produces chemicals to fight disease and all sorts of things just by being happy. I majored in Biology/Pre-Med and know that there is concrete documentation for this, but do not remember all the chemical names because it has been a long time since. People who smoke are turmoiled by something and so do it greatly as a form of self-destruction so that they not feel their other pain. This is quite a twisted road to unravel. But to keep things simple and to make certain that your mother lives a long wonderful life, make sure that she is happy overall and that she laughs a lot.

Tell her to shape up and YOU can take control. Get rid of most of the junk food in the house, get her outside more often since its summer, sign up for the gym and go with her, all of these things can help her become healthier. check out foodnetwork.com and get healthy recipies too

Buy her a gift certificate at a women's work out centre, and/or sign up with her at one of her preferred locations, and enjoy spending that quality time together. Perhaps once she get into routinely going with you, she'll look forward to it more and more, and she'll get the idea. Good luck!

By being an example with the way you live a healthy lifestyle. I also hear you saying that you care, reminding her of that might help. But don't nag. They hate that.

Let's see, how aobt you take over the cooking at home. You can cook healthy meals for her.
The rest is up to her, it is out of your control. nagging won't help.
