This is a modern translation that is used very extensively in many churches, especially those who hold a very high view of scripture. The NIV (New International Version) is thought by many Theologans to be a more accurate translation than the King James version. In addition, it is a modern-day translation that is very easy to read and understand.
I bought my first one about 20 years ago. The Pastor at my church at that time preached from the King James and spent a significant amount of time explaining and clarifying passages in that version. I found that my NIV almost always translated a passage the way he would tell us that the KJ version should but didn't.
The King James is still one of the more reliable translations compared to other versions that are out there. But I have personally come to view those who hold to it as theologically lazy. The NIV was translated after the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. While that discovery did not change any significant Christian doctrines, it did help clarify many of the questions that were points of theological contention in the KJ translation .Having those clarifications available during it's translation makes the NIV a more accurate translation in my opinion.
Our current Pastor use the NIV and all of the Bibles we keep in the pews next to the hymnals are NIV. Church camp played a big part in the lives of my 4 kids who are now grown. I would feel good that they are requesting that your Daughter obtain that tranlation. It speaks well of the camp and their desire to give the kids an accurate Christian educational experience.
Our church has inexpensive copies that we can buy for $5 or so. Family Christian Stores or Walmart also sell them. Pricing usually depends on how good of a cover you want (vinyl vs leather bound).
Hope she has a great time.

NIV is the new international version (as said before). i think it's a good version of the Bible for young people, because it is translated (from the original hebrew and greek) into easier-to-understand english. i am studying to become a Presbyterian minister, as well as a summer church camp counselor, and because of this i have several "youth" bibles, which include special pages that deal with everyday current issues. all of these youth bibles are the NIV.
a good bible for your daughter, in my opinion, might be the teen devotional bible from the Zondervan Publishing House. any Christian bookstore should have it or another similar teen Bible. it would be a wonderful thing for her even after camp is over.

New International Version.
This version was developed by a wide range of scholars from various traditions who sought accuracy in translation from the original texts (a lot of informative ancient documents have been discovered since the early translations), but who were also sensitive to traditional elements from the earlier versions, like the KJV. The result is a more accurate translation which reads well and sounds "familiar," and the interpretation was free of influences like a king looking over the shoulders of the translators, lest they cause the scriptures to say anything that challenges the monarchy!
The NIV is a very solid translation, and it should be understandable and clear for a 12 year-old reader.

New International Version...unlike the King James Version, it isnt in the "bible days" language. This version uses words that we understand more clearly today.
I had a great bible called the New Adventure Bible by Zondervan. It is steered around kids and has little tid bits of info along the way...like stuff like ?did you know? back when , and it helps kids understand the cool parts of the bible instead of getting bored with it. In a way it brings something from so far back into today's world.
Hope this helps

"NIV" stands for New International Version. Most Bibles will say what version they are on the binding or the front cover.
