my 1yr. old has had this diaper rash for about a month. i have tried every kind of ointment and none really work that well. the rash will start to clear up but when she has a bowel movement it automatically gets worse again. also her stool has been runny lately. i change her constentely so she isn't in a soiled diaper for long. i am going to call the dr. tomorrow, but does anyone have any tips for the meantime?

It could actually be a yeast infection, you`re doc can prescribe something. Definately Air dry as much as possible, and use a wet washcloth instead of wipes, they irritate baby`s skin. or if thats too yucky, just run a wipe under running water to get the alcohol off of it and it`s like a disposable washcloth.Desitin creates a moisture barrier too. My 9 month old has the same problem, her doc diagnosed it as a yeast infection

It may seem seem silly and impractical but let her wear no diaper for as long as possible. The risk of the accident and mess is worth how well the open air works.

Since you mention the runny stools and that she is one her diet is probably changing too and that is a common cause as well. Our daughter started eating pasta with tomatoes sauce at about 12 months and the acid in tomatoes seemed to make things much worse. Maybe you can determine if her changing diet has an affect.

You did say you have used every type of ointment but when the rash is bad make sure you have tried the extra-strength ones such as Desitin extra strength (37% zinc oxide) or Zincofax (%40 zinc oxide).

Don't use powder, just clean, dry and uncovered.

Babies in Africa with no diapers never get diaper rash, that's why they call it "diaper" rash. :)

Please in the future if your baby has a rash or runny stools for more than 24 hrs. please take them to the doctor and don't accept wait for the next if you have to sit and wait for a missed or late appointment , because you are responsible to your bay's heath.

Now for that rash try Lanisho (maybe not spelled right , but close)it's a ointment all natural from aloe that women use during beast feeding for sore and crack nipples it really works. ( I've used it every since I found out about it over five years ago). It doesn't take much. It will work almost over night it's very soothing and dose not burn, when you change you baby wipe or pat very gently especially if the bottom is raw. if it is causing your baby great pain don't worry if you don't wipe it all off.(It's not gross) give it time to heal continuous wiping will only make it worse. Are there any new foods, clothes (material) pampers, wipes, baby wash, drinks, laundry soap, etc.
You can find the ointment just about any where Wal-Mart, grocery stores, pharmacy, in the baby care section purple tube ask if you don't see it it might run around $10.00, but it' worth it use after every diaper change rash or not to will help kept a barrier on the bottom. and always check with your baby's doctor.

You really should have gone to see your dr much sooner.... The dr could have prescribed something that would have cleared it up much fast than waiting it out. Does your baby have thrush? Sometimes with really sever cases of thrush, the yeast infection can actually move to the babies bottom. This is another reason why you should always seek your dr's advice promptly.

But, always make sure you keep your diapers changed. Always let the behind air dry. Don't use powder. This does nothing but make things worse. Also, wipes can casue irritation. Try to use just a mild soap & water. I think Huggies makes those wash cloth like clothes that just need to be moistened. They work great when your baby has a rash.

Every child's behind & skin is different. With my 4 and 1 year old, I was able to use Destine, but this made my 2 year old break out worse. Keep working on different things and stick with what works.

HTH ........ good luck.........

My (second) doctor also recommended a mixture of Desatin and VERY LITTLE yeast infection ointment. Mix it up, slather it on before bed, and add some baby powder (wiithOUT cornstarch). My daughter usually cleared up by morning.

You can let her run around naked and you might have to change the type of diapers you use. My daughter kept a bad rash for months and the doctor just kept saying ointment. I switched diapers (and then doctors) and she got better (and the second doctor called the first and idiot for not suggesting that she could be allergic to the diapers).

Also be sure that IF you use baby powder to change her the SECOND she wakes up and be sure to clean ALL the powder off of her. It often stuck to my daughter, but it seemed to help. So doctors say not to use it, I say use what works. Also oatmeal bath can help too!

Wow, a month!!??

Let her go without a diaper for longer periods of time. She needs the air to get to it. Also, change diapers, I mean brands of diapers. Your Dr. will recommend a cream for you to use because an ointment is necessary, penatan cream is my cream of choice and I lather it on.

It also seems pretty clear that she is showing signs of a food allergy or food reaction so take a look at her diet over the last month, any citrus? any juice? milk? formula change? something is causing the rash and it's usually dietary if it is that severe and regular. My son had a reaction to citrus and it took forever for me to figure out it was that but when he peed it was like acid to his skin and the rash was bleeding, it was so awful! Stick with changing constantly because the urine or bowel movements are causing the rash when they are against the skin.

A warm bath, a long, long warm bath (no soap or bubbles) will make baby's bum feel so much better!
Poor baby.

First of all the best thing for diaper rash is the air. leave him with out his diaper on for awhile. When my son was at the doctors for a diaper rash problem they gave him a prescription cream because the rash was a form of yeast infection. Yes boys can get yeast infections. The next day the rash was gone. good luck

If it has gone on that long that it is a possibility that it isn't just a diaper rash and it could be a yeast infection. I had the same problem with my daughter when she was a baby. So try something for a yeast infection and see what happens, it should start helping with in a day or so.
Good luck

Use boudreaux's butt paste(its a diaper rash medicine -- sold in a jar or tube with yellow label) or any diaper rash medication with a lot of zinc oxide in it. Stop using baby wipes until it clears. Clean baby's bottom with a warm wash clothe instead. Do this at every diaper change until rash clears just allow a few seconds for baby's bottum to dry before appling diaper rash medication and rediapering. Leave baby without diaper as much as possible. Bath baby in aveno bath or oatmeal bath(let them soak in this--you can do this several times a day). Change diaper often(every time it wets). DONT USE BABY POWDER OR CORN STARCH --- THEY CAKEUP AND CAN HOLD MOISTURE. Good luck--hope it clears soon.

Corn Starch and Baby Powder are the very best for making an icky diaper rash go away. I had a similar problem with one of my girls and corn starch cleared it up within the week, I know it probably doesn't seem as soothing as all the ointments but it sure works.
