Alright, Im one of those "poor" things working on a cruise ship. It is an extremely hard work. Nobody works less than 70 hours per week, always smiling (non stop). Crew lives in cabins of 4 w/ a sharing bathroom, sometimes there are even 5 persons per cabin. Most contracts last as long as 10months without a day off, unless you are really, really sick with a high tempr. Average pay is somewhere around 3-5$ per hour.
Sorry to say, but most americans who tried this just couldnt handle such amount of working hours for this kind of pay and just quit. Plus, I have to say that you have to pass a couple of tests and trainings just to be considered for hiring.
Anyway, better go on cruises and enjoy it!

I don't know exacts, but I believe they make more than the average waitress.I believe most waitress make less than minimum wage, this isn't true for a cruise line.
While I definitely agree a cruise is a blast, you may reconsider working on one. You should talk to some people that have or do. You work a lot, 80 hours a week is the average. I was talking to my one waiter the day we were getting off of a cruise once, he had his hair cut at 2 in the morning so that he could go back to work serving breakfast the next day.
It's a lot of hours and a lot of work and you often put up with a lot of things. But, it a great way to meet new people and see new places. Just don't expect to work normal hours and then be able to play on the cruise.

I don't think you would want to work on a cruise ship as a waitress. All of the cruise ships hire people from low wage countries and their pay for the work that they do is the gratuity that people pay. So figure this, you have two tables for two dinner seatings, a total of lets say 15 people for each at most. They pay $3.50 each day for 7 days and you get about $735.00 for the week. But you put in 60 hours. So you are getting about $4.50 an hour. The pay is so low on ships that NCL could not get people in HAwaii to work the ships that cruise the islands until they raised the pay.

You won't make that much in an entry level job, so you need to examine your lifestyle. Could you pack up everything you own and put it in storage, or sub-let your place? If so it might be OK since you'd be gone so much that would offset rent and utilities etc. Would you keep your place and afford to stay there say 10 days a month? It's very strict about what you can and cannot do. There are always reps from Norweigen Cruise lines at any San Diego job fair. I always thought it would be a blast too, but your time is NEVER your own, because even when you're ont working you're representing the boat, which means no drinking, no escapades! Probably the things that made a cruise seem desirable in the first place!

The hours on a cruise ship are killer. You have to be up to serve breakfast that starts generally at 6 or 7 am. You then have to stay up to serve dinner until 10 or 10:30 + clean-up. You cannot mingle with the guests off duty. You can get down time during the day to go ashore, but I believe that you work for months at a time before getting a break.
They also don't have to pay minimum wage nor comply with US Labor Laws. You work for tips and posibly some sort of supplimental salary.

The waiters and waitresses make almost all of their money in tips alone and its all tax free. If you work as a ships photographer you starve literally. Basically it all depends on what your job is aboard ship. Cabin Stewards also make very good money but they work extremely hard cleaning cabins all day long. Most of them are foreigners from various countries all over the world where the people do not make decent wages back home.

Thats way too broad a question!! What do you want to do in a cruise ship? A captain will earn much more than a sweeper so really this question has no real answer.

a good pal of mine worked on the disney ship..there are different levels of crew and different levels of pay. some people who work on the cruise lines never get to go into guest areas. they are always in the lower decks that no one sees. you also have to share a very small cabin with other co workers
also it is a lot of work.. and if you call in sick you HAVE to be sick because your boss will know where your state room is and will have the ship doctor come to check on you.
and if you get sea sick you can never leave the boat!

The captain makes over $100,000 a year. The busboys get minimum wage or less.
