Whatever you're comfortable with. There are cavity back irons, muscleback irons or combo irons. Since you're a beginner, cavity backs would be most wise for you. musclebacks are more for experienced players and combo irons are good for mid to low handicappers. You'll want to stay away from long irons and replace them with hybrid clubs instead. easier to hit and more versatile than regular irons. Probably forget a driver and stick with a 3 and 5 wood instead which will help your confidence a little. You'll probably be able to hit your 3 wood further than your driver if you notice. As far as brands go, cheap route would be to get a starter set from any sporting goods store or walmart or kmart. They're cheap and usually come with all the clubs you'll need to get started. from there you'll be able to see which ones you hate the most and which you like the best. If you're into brand name then I would either go with Callaway or Taylor Made. Each offer unique clubs both regular and hybrid that would make your game a little easier. But for now, i'd either get a starter set or a nice used set from 2nd Swing, Play It Again Sports or Hit 'Em Again.

I would go with a nice used set. If you are just learnign how to play then don't go and spend a ton of money on brand new clubs that cost a fortune. I would look for a used set of Adams ideas or A2 OS or you could look for a used set fo Nike Slingshots. Get a set of irons that are forgiving and look into some hybrids to replace your 3 and 4 iron.

For a beginner I would definitely look for a nicer used set. Once you starting getting the hang of it and it is accually the clubs that are hurting your score I would go look for some new ones. I started out with a used set and last year one of the irons broke in half so I went out and got a new set of irons.
Adams golf make really nice clubs thats definitely my ideal choice.

GO to a qualifed PGA professional teacher and get lessons. Then he or she should be able to suggest several USED sets for your perusal. SInce golf is a game based on feel, practice with them in lesson or playing circumstances (if possible) before deciding on what you should use.
Don't forget to get lessons on golf manners as well.

there's no paticular brand you should buy and buying a used set is a good idea , just make sure you get them correctly fitted for you and buying an oversized set with a bigger sweet spot would be the way to go since your only learning.

I agree that used is the way to go for the first set. Try an oversized set out,... their larger sweetspot is much more forgiving..... good luck and hit 'em straight,...
