That is a long time to be is a daze. I havent had tv for 5 years and dont miss it at all. Its the very adult thing to do, you know, not have to have constant entertainment. Maybe now you can use that time you would have wasted on tv to brush up on you other skills and become more sociable. Hmm.....

During the gulf war, Line in the Sand, there was this guy that was nicknamed the Scud Stud. C'mon. The war became a form of entertainment and I was deeply offended by it.
At that same time, the kids turned on Sesame Street at 4:30 one afternoon and got Geraldo by mistake. The show was about male strippers. The boys hit the wrong channel right during the stripper's demonstration. I remember clearly my innocent little children, eyes glued to the set, "Mom, I don't think you want us watching this..."
We gave up the TV for a little more than 10 years. It was wonderful. The kids played together and with others nicely. Even the hyper ones...
Then, about six years ago, we got a TV so that the nurses who cared for our child would have something to keep themselves awake at night. We began to let the kids watch and, before you know it, addiction! TV has become another visitor in our home, and it's as if I am not able to ask him to leave. And, he is rude! And, he takes my money. And, he is influencing my children. I am outnumbered in my desire to make him go away, so he stays. In my living room.
Without TV, life is real. Give up the TV and get out in the real world, make some friends, engage in some activities, have conversations about real things, take some classes, or read a book. It doesn't take as long as you might think to get over the addiction. You'll find time for projects, and you'll eat healthier.
Seriously, whether I am the best answer or not, I mean it. Give up the TV and participate in life. (Same with the computer, by the way.) There is so much to do out there if you aren't wasting time with things that are fake and controlled by the profits of others.
I really look forward to saying good bye to our long-term visitor.

Yes. I tried to give up television for Lent one year as a child and my parents said it wouldn't count since I rarely watched anyway. Well, I am no longer Catholic and I still rarely watch television. In fact, for about a ten year period I did not even own a television. I think think television shows a very myopic viewpoints about the world around us. The only way to know any different is to experience the real world. The library is probably one of my favorite places and has been most of my life.

I lived for five years without a TV. I did not miss it, because I did not allow myself to get bored. My boyfriend at the time and I went out for entertainment and when we stayed inside we read to each other, cooked together listened to our favorites Cd's. There are so many things people could do besides watch TV, it's really ridiculous to sit and watch it for hours on end.

Yes! TV has taught me alot. Every time that someone turns it on, I get a book and go in the other room. And Bill Hicks agreed that the media uses the TV to keep the people stupid and incompetent. Listen to some John Prine music. Blow up your TV!

I love to read too and I don't watch much TV at all but I wouldn't want to get rid of the TV because it is a good source for news and of course weather. Just cut down on the amount of time you spend in front of it.
