I split one in half. You can tear it easily.
and then bite into it. You can eat the skin. But if you don't like it you can just scrape the goodness out of the center with your teeth.
This moethod is especially recommended if you are eating a fig off a tree. Ants love figs. And this will let you know if you need to clear them out first.

You can eat them right off the bush or you can make fig preserves and eat it on a biscuit.

raw, dried or cooked....My grandmother used to can them in a simple syrup which my dad would eat on biscuits for breakfast. She would also make strawberry fig perserves which is how i like it---great on a peanut butter sandwich. But alas she is gone and no one else makes wither one like she did.

step one: ascertain where the stem is (if there is one)
two: hold stem between forefinger and thumb
three: open mouth
four: insert fig, taking care not to eat stem
five: bite
six: chew
seven: swallow
Good luck
