The best way can vary from place to place, but I can tell you how I did it after 20 years as an aircraft mechanic in the Navy, I went to work as a computer machine operator. Loading tapes, putting paper in the printers, and learned console operations on the mainframe. While doing that, I studied Unix, and when the company had an opening for a Unix tech, i applied for it. they sent me to school on each of the systems we worked with.
In other words, get any job you can in a company that uses Unix, and then watch for an opening and go for it.

Start out by looking for positions within a business' computer room or data center. Things like pulling and connecting cables, delivering reports, tape library, call desk, moving PCs, and yes... even making copies. Once you're in the door, then you'll be able to network with other people from whom you can learn the skills you desire. As you acquire skills you will also be able to monitor the in office chatter and job positions (internal and external) for positions with higher responsibility and of course, higher pay. You'd be surprised at how fast this can happen, especially if you get in with a fast paced organization. Just remember to keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut. Learn all that you can because knowledge is light, you can carry it anywhere. Good luck.
