I've been told that it was written down by ancient rishis who were able to experience the realization of those worlds. Atleast that is most likely where the information comes from. Chances are, though, that the ancient rishis weren't the one's that wrote it down. It was passed along orally before it was written down (probably like the Vedas, thus it was probably put into chant with rhythms and verses, etc so that it was easier to remember...the ancients seem to have understood that people can remember songs better than they can what is just said).
