I'd like to have a "true" center channel in my truck. My idea is to run a lead from the front left postive (FL+) and one from the FR- from my amp, or wired in parallel with the existing FL and FR speakers. All components are aftermarket. I can, of course, also use a potentiometer to adjust the output of this speaker. I'd like to know if 1), i should run the leads from my amp or in parallel , 2) is this even possible without damaging my components, and 3) what did i miss, what else do i need? (got speakers and wire).

You must not tie two output channels together without some resistance between them. If one channel goes to high output and the other channel is very low or zero, connecting the two directly would be a SHORT CIRCUIT and would blow the amp. You could try a T-pad, which feeds each channel through a serial resistor, but the power loss from the resistors would then require more amplification before going to the speaker.

It would be easiest to just get a pair of little speakers and mount left and right close together in the center.
