I need to know when Nectarines are ripe, from the outside of the skin. Specificly, Summerwhite Nectarines, but any information would be great. Thanks.

use your nose.. ripe fruit will smell... well... ripe. Apply a bit of pressure with your thumb to the top of the fruit. Put your nose up against it and smell.. Smells good then it should taste good.

Chad W is correct, but it is still a crap shoot if they are sweet since they are picked green, i.e., not ripe. You can put a peach or nerctarine on the window sill and it will get soft but it will not be any riper than when it was picked, the naturally riper it is the sweeter it is.

They are soft but not mushy. They should not be crunchy (like an apple).

i wish i could help you with this one cause i have the same problem picking them out at the store, the ones that look real good and usually the lousy ones, the only way i can tell is by taking a bite out of it, if its bad i put it into a plastic bag and pay for it anyway, if its great i still put the bitten one in the bag with all the good ones.... if you figure out a way to tell please let me know !!!!!!!!!!!!!

when it is not rock hard but not to where you touch it it squishes IN your hands because if so it is rotten
