Sorry, if she was late getting to the terminal, she's at their mercy.
If the flight was delayed, cancelled, or overbooked and she got "bumped", then that would be a different story.
For now though, it looks like she's there till 08:00 tomorrow morn, unless somone cancels and they can swap her on an earlier flight.

It all depends on the situation. If it was the airline's fault--like if her flight left early, or her connection didn't arrive on time--then they will do something for her. Also, her age will play a factor--if you is a minor travelling without a parent, for example. If the missed flight was due to her negligence, then she will be on her own. Sometimes if you find a sympathetic ticket agent, they will really pull some strings to get you on another flight--happened to me once with AA, and there was no extra charge even though it was my fault. Otherwise, she's in for a long night in an uncomfortable chair in the airport. Good luck to her...:)

If she missed the connection because a flight earlier in the day was late, I would imagine they would at least put her up for the night in a local hotel. You'll have to call American to find out specifics, though.

Why does she not have a credit card for use during emergency situations? You may need to look into that. Or, at very least, get her a checking account with a debit card. That way, you can deposit money in her account and she would be able to access it at an ATM.

Whose fault is it?

If it's the airline's (i.e. she's been bumped), then they will provide her with compensation and should be working like hell to get her on the next available flight, even if it's on another airline. Ask AA about their bump rules, and take them to task on it.

If she's to blame, then, well, she's SOL'ed. If the airline staff help her out, then be very thankful.

They will offer her a hotel room and meal vouchers for dinner tonight and breakfast in the morning. Have her go to the ticket counter for the vouchers, and have them call the hotel to send a car for her.
