I'm not single but I have friends who have a long list of things they are looking for in a mate. Secretly, I don't think the dream person exists. Some things are bad like a history of abandonment, abuse or addiction. I think life is full of wonderful surprises and they should broaden their horizons? Do you have a list? What are some dos and don't? Are some things negoiatble? Are their real deal breakers?

I never write down my list - there is no page long enough!

I mentally check or cross off items as I get to know the guy.

Some items never come up, because he dumps me or I kick his a.s.s to the curb!

Yes and No. Somethings are dealbreakers as you point out. Smoking is a good example. You can tolerate it or you can't.

I think it's much more useful to make two lists. The first is a list of the five goals you have that are most important to you. The second is a list of the activities that give you pleasure (not sexual).

As you get to know your potential mate, see how closely their lists match yours. If they match well and you are friends as well as lovers, go for it.
