swimming is not a sport you want to be doing if you dont like it, specially when you are getting into competition and had training..

I knew this guy who loved swimming more than anything, but was reaaaally slow in highschool, like reaally slow. But he enjoyed it so much that he kept swimming. His senior year droped 40 seconds in his 500 and now he is the best in the country, triple NCAA champion.. moral of the story? if you love to swim, swim.. and dont worry about times in highschool

if you just want something to do in the afternoon maybe you should think of other sports

Here's the great thing - in high school swimming, there are ALL LEVELS of swimmers! There will most likely be others just like you, who have great fun swimming, and just want to join for that reason. There will be others who have been club swimming since they were 6 years old, who are there for the chances they get to swim in meets and be seen by college recruiters.

You will find a place somewhere on your HS swim team where you fit in. You will be able to find out what events you are good at (sprint vs. distance, freestyle vs. breaststroke for example), and you will notice as time goes on that you are getting faster and faster. The wonderful thing about the sport is that you can have your own individual success. It doesn't matter if you swim a 36 second 50 freestyle or a 28 second 50 freestyle - your successes are your own, and you will see them as long as you work hard. (A word to the wise, though, don't join if you don't want to work - do everybody that favor.)

Remember - if you decide not to do it, are you always going to wonder what you could have done?

Oh definitely, hun! When I went into my freshman year, I was just like you. I loved swimming but everyone was so much faster than me and it was intimidating. In the end, I did join and I stayed on the team for 2 years (I just transferred to a new school so no more HS swim team for me).

What you've got is heart. Don't worry about anyone else about yourself when it comes to speed because you're the kind of person that the coach will be looking at because of your dedication to the sport AND you seem like you won't have a big ego. I'm sure you'll blow everyone out of the water by junior year.

Have fun!

If you got the interest, you can actually master this sport. My height alone is 182cm, around 6ft. I don't deny that height is a crucial factor. I have a long arm-chest-arm length of 190cm. I had been first in competitions, and in the past, i was only 160cm++, at the age of 14, I also had no hopes on i would grow tall and make my country stand proud. I think you would need to have a nutritional diet, as my diet is tweaked according to a dietician. to make me tall. I think you shouldnt be fussy about eating healthy things. It shows that those who hate drinking milk and eating fish have a high possibility of malnutrition in protein and cause development to slow down. Go on, make the school proud. Height isn't a factor. Without encouragement, I am not what I am today. Seriously. Tell yourself: No, I am not short, I got the talent and the determination to strive! the skills is what it matters, not about height. But still find a dietician(or nutritionist) to find the suitable diet for a growing kid. Hope this serves a good purpose =)

i am debating almost the same thing with track. i don't know wether or not to join because all the others are sooo much faster, but i love to run and i decided that i will never let the intimidation of others get in the way of what i love to do. we all reep the rewards of HARD work. so go out there and give it a chance and seriouss hard work and you'll be surprised w/ ur results. just think, u could die wondering "what if..." and all that held you back were a few fast people. i say go for it!!! good luck and have fun with it!!!

Sure! Its a great way to make friends and get in shape! And youll be with those people on the team and they will be friends with you for a long time. I have been on a team since the age of 4 and I have soo many friends that I have met at away meets and through invitationals. It doesnt matter if your the best or the worst, just give it your all and thats what matters!

We are all different from each other... and you are ALWAYS going to find people better and worst than you!
There are some obstacles that we need to surpass in our lives. If you say that you love swimming that much, why not do it. Give it a shot. You might be surprised then. Don't get intimidated by other people. Do what you love and if swimming is what you love then practice and practice so you can get better all the time.
Wish you luck!

public swim teams are naturally slower then people that do winter swimming or high school swimming as well.

dont worry, at the high school level, within two weeks you'll be caught up with the rest of your friends as long as you work hard. while they may be getting faster, if you're slower like you said, you'll be dropping much more time than your friends and will soon be fine.

yes you should. Those friends that were all faster than you, you will catch up if you practice and join the swim team.

Yeah join. You join for the fun, not because you are slow or fast. You may not win every race, but being there is the point and trying. The race is against yourself and pushing yourself further than you had before.
