Try this: "set the stage." That means that you can create a time and place and atmosphere where you are going to be working. Turn off the tv or turn it down very low so you can hear voices and you will not feel so alone. Get away from the tv set, so you can not see the screen; get a comfortable chair, table, and writing area; settle yourself in a comfortable position; then take a deep breathe -in through your nose, slowly out your mouth-let your shoulders relax and sag a little; now, that you are ready. DON'T LET THE HOMEWORK SCARE YOU. It's only paper, ink, and pencil. Do your best. Trust yourself and do this for yourself. Now, that you have finished that piece of work, have a little break, or a soda; then tackle the next thing. You could even make a list of what you need to do and mark off each one AFTER you do it. Then you will see how much you have accomplished. This worked for three school kids that I knew personally. Good Luck and Blessings.

My 17 year old son has been diagnosed with ADD. My older son and husband suffer from depression, which affects the brain similarly.

My son took Ritalin, Adderall and Stratera and is back on Adderall. Do you take time release Ritalin? It may work better for you since there aren't as many highs and lows of the meds in your bloodstream. If you are taking regular Ritalin you may need to take a booster dose before you start your homework and find a quiet place, away from TV and other distractions.

The way ADD was described to me is that the right and left hemisphers of the brain have trouble communicating what is really important and every little thing because just as important (i.e. the fly on the wall, the TV, mom walking into the room, etc).

I hope you are also getting behavioral therapy. Drugs don't always resolve the problem and therapy will help you get through school successfully.

My daughter has ADD. As with any mental illness, you have to work through medications until you can find one that works for you. I would not stop taking them out of frustration. My daughter takes Metadate which is a shorter acting form of Ritalin. She is able to sleep, eat and still focus. Perhaps you should have a longer better talk with your psychiatrist on your side effects of your medications to find one that is better suited.
As for the distraction, go to an area where there is no TV, and put a sign up to please do not disturb. Ask for family cooperation.
Good luck!

Yes. If the TV can't be off when you are trying to concentrate on your homework then the TV needs to be removed from the house. You need to have a clean, clear area where you can do your homework without being distracted. This area should be totally uncluttered so as not to take your concentration away from what you need to do.

There are MANY resources you can tap into. Go to www.google.com and you can find support, alternative treatment to drug therapy, and many more resourses for Attention Deficit Disorder. This site seemed to have a lot of alternatives and direction for those in need of help: http://www.ldonline.org/

Best of luck! This disorder DOESN'T mean you can't learn, it only needs a different path to learn than the 'majority' of the people learn- does NOT mean 'NORMAL' people- means MAJORITY. Most of the people I've worked with with ADD or ADHD are quite intelligent-it's only a matter of finding a learning path that gives you the most for what you want to learn.:)

Try turning the tv off and go to a room where you wont be distrubed, ADD is an invented disorder to sell drugs. You dont have ADD, just poor study habits.
