Book atleast 30 days in advanced, that is when the lowest fares are available. Shop around checking all of the travel sites, but go straight to the airlines websites. The major airlines are having to be more competitive and Im finding cheaper fares with them rather than the low cost carriers like Jet Blue and Southwest. No matter what site you use, READ ALL OF THE FARE RULES to know what you are agreeing to. Priceline, Cheap Tickets, Lowest Fare etc all have highly restricted tickets and lock you in once you accept the terms and pay. These tickets, along with many other discount websites, are binding and you can not change them and the airlines will not touch them if there is a problem.

Booking your travel for a mid-week departure and return is best. Mon-Thurs are cheapest and believe it or not Saturday's are too. Most people are where they want to be for the weekend and Saturday is pretty slow depending on the city and time of year.

If you fly a lot, sign up for a loyalty program with a credit card. FInd out who services your local airport(s) and check out their terms and interest rates. Find out who you prefer to use, what airlines they have an alliance with that serves where you would like to travel and who has better sign up bonuses. There are cards that you can redeem points or milage for any airline they have an agreement with. So if you live on credit, this is a good way to earn free flights.

Honestly, I always got the best airline fares from going to the American Airlines site directly instead of trying to book through the "discount" companies like Orbitz or Cheapfares. I would check with AA first, and just to make sure you are getting a good deal, go ahead and check with orbitz or hotwire, just to take a peek at the fares. It will take more time, but well worth it!!!! Good luck and have a safe flight! :)

I've had great results starting with "Yahoo!Farechase" and copy the best itinerary to an airline's website to get the best price. If you are not hooked on frequent flier miles, "priceline" may be the best bet.

you have to look frequently. I have always found it to be a bit cheaper going directly to the airlines websites rather than the other ones like orbitz.com, or travelocity.com

Also, check on a Tues. or Wed. fares are usually cheaper then. Also helps if your dates for travel are flexible.
