I'm a Studio Art major and it really makes me mad that they are trying to lessen the amount of arts in schools. Obviously art is very important to me, but I feel like it is also important to the development of the minds of young children! It really seems like physical education is surpassing the arts in elementary-high schools and although P.E. is important, there needs to be a balance!

Very important. Knowledge is one thing, relating it to others, the world we live in and its history, and creativity are paramount in importance. As is self-expression. The more interesting the world, the more interested we will be. Humans need, in this computer age, to keep realizing that without learning and desiring to relate to others, we stagnate. As a trumpet major, you must know this intuitively. A trumpet can be a beautiful instrument, played by Wynton, Gillespie, Andre, or the 2nd part of the Brandenburg concerto, but without listeners, it will simply be an exercise...in futility.

Yes. Often people do not get exposure to different facets of the arts. Art in the curriculum helps people to discover what they like, and helps to make people more rounded and get more out of life.

Without a doubt. I don't understand why these programs are cut so often when the arts are a part of human nature! They are the expression of ones heart and soul. I don't understand why some feel it is expendable.

Yes I certainly do - these subjects help to complete your whole education and give you an insight as to what they entail. How do young people know what they like etc. if they are never exposed to anything but modern radio etc. and only their parents likes and dislikes. Kids dont have to like everything but they need to be exposed to different things to find out.

I think that it is very important, it gives students a chance to express themselves. It is also very educational, not only in learning how to play an instrument or act but it also builds confidence in one's self.
