what do you mean "what if" they were

I know what you mean: THE CONTROL BY FEAR and you have a very good and valid point. The religions that came to Latin America from english countries were created to destroy Catholicism because the new "wave" wanted better conditions for poor people, and I'm not a naive person: I know the power that exists in the Vatican and all the money they have.

But I think we have to see BEYOND, and realize that sometimes you need something better, something that validates you as a person, and as John Donne said, a man cannot live without some kind of God's notion or the thought they will go to some better place, no one wants to believe this is all we got (at least almost everyone)

this was not the original point of religions being created the founders of various religons cocreated(had help from higher source goes by many names but is the same source)to allow people to live the best life possible if you will go on the net or to your local library or to a bookstore and get or read some books on different religions you will seee some underlying points love your emeny/neighbor do right help the poor sick and defendless honor your higher power(goes by many names but it is the same source)some religious figures(not all)will focus on the punishment side of their paticular path to maintain a preception of control manilupation etc while other religous leaders will instead focus on helping people to acheive their own religous plane of higher awareness these are the ones who are better religous leaders than those who focus on money their are good and bad religous leaders in every sect and tradition these should be avoided at all costs the main thing to realize is that the higher power(many names) loves you you are his/her child the leader is just a guide not a dictator a good teacher will always step back and let the student come into full relization at the right time the different dogma is just icing on the cake the real religion lies within you (provided you harm none this includes yourself) hope this has helped somewhat Blessings

The human psyche is so simple that the vast mojority (of human beings) need to be controlled. They want it. Thats why you have Napoleon, Hitler, etc.

I'm not saying that there is no faith but ALL is NOT faith.

So, you don't have to create religion to control the masses. The masses are just waiting to be controlled. In modern days, you have secret societies, devil worshippers, weird religious sects and so on. Even for the atheist, he/she craves to be controlled

If that were true, all religions would have underlying "controlling" tones, like condemning all other religions, creating some sort of punishment for those who don't follow that specific religion, judging people not of the specific religion as evil or immoral... oh wait...

You have been reading too much communist propaganda. Some religions indeed do take advantage of the poor, but research christianity and you will find through the centuries the SPIRITUAL church has been the best friend the poor ever had. Example- THE SALVATION ARMY.
