Would the person have to come onto your property or into your home?

How would they figure out which line is mine if they went to a switch station? This seems like a lot of work for the average joe.

it depends on who's doing it. If its part of a legal investigation and the agency doing the investigation has a legal warrant then all they have to do is call the phone company and have a tap put on but otherwise someone would physically have to put a listening device on your line

Nope. It's not gonna do our paranoids a favor by telling ya. They can tap your line from the phone company's office. Modern taps and phone systems are such that the old "voltage" bug detectors are useless unless someon'e used an old tap on your phone's physical in house line. It's not done so much any more with the digital and fiber optics, but the old system had a line test setup that would let you play conversations over a loudspeaker in the central office. (t'was regulated to protect privacy) this was to check sound quality on the line.

it's as easy as plugging in a lamp. And no. The closest they would have to get is the closest switch station, if they can identify which line is yours. Otherwise, they only have to get as close as the line coming out of your house, be it the outside connection, at the pole, or underground station, or whatever. Clip 2 wires onto the terminal connected to a transmitter tuned to an FM frequency, and sit within 100 feet to hear every word. Now, you can do it too.

No. They can tap it from a telephone pole, junction box, or wherever the phone signal comes from.

That would be the easiest phone to tap.
