my friend had been sick for a couple weeks and went to the hospital, turns out she has mono. she has a cat, that honestly is more human than anything, and for about the last 2 weeks this very active cat, has done nothing but sleep, doesnt have much appitite, and just lays around. so because this is basically the same side effect that my friend has, we were wondering if anyone has ever heard of a cat catching mono from his owner. i know that animals do get human illnesses because my dog has colitus, and has to take med.anyway i really would like your input .thanks

i guess you thought my friend had to stay in the hosp.but she is home, she is tired all the time and sleeps alot, and so does her cat. niether of them care to eat,and neither are very active.that is why i wondered if the cat could have caught mono from her.

I'm not sure if the cat can get mono, but I'm sure it is just because he senses how your friend feels. Animals are VERY sensitive to this sort of thing... My cats and old dog could always tell if I was sad because they come up and comfort me...and when my husband and I raise our voices, our kittens come up and try to rub up against us to calm us down...

It sounds more like the cat is lonely and bored, rather than sick. I would take the cat to the vet anyway, just to make sure, but the cat is probably just depressed. If you've got the time, try spending time with the cat. It might make the cat happy, and help pull the cat out of her funk.
Good luck!

I've had mono before but I don't think I ever gave it to my cat. Mono, I don't think, is a disease animals can catch. The cat may just be mourning b/c he misses your friend. I had a cat die before and my other cat actually mourned himself to death. I'm sure her cat will be fine.

Cats and other animals can sense when their owner is sick, ill, in pain, sad, depressed, etc.
Most animals will stay close and comfort their owner when ill.
I would just say the cat senses that the friend is sick and is acting like a mom, waching over them.

There are very very very few diseases that are transferrable between species. Your friend's cat needs to be checked out by a veterinarian to see what exactly is wrong with it. It is just a coincidence that they are both sick at the same time.

sounds more like the cat is missing his owner. my dog did the same thing, when we went on an extended vacation. our dog sitter called us, and we had to cut the vacation short. he wasn't eating, he just laid around and slept.
when we got back, after a couple days of love, food, and attention..he was fine.
but if your really concerned..take him to the vet.
