I need to lose weight around my belly and hip/thigh areas. Running is too boring for me.

I know what you mean, running is really boring for me too. I admire the ones who can do it, but it's not for me either.
You'll get a good workout on either one. The bike will give you incredible legs, it will get your heart in shape, and you'll burn fat too. The elliptical machine might be best for the areas you want to work on. You might want to alternate the elliptical with the bike, as to keep from getting bored. I can tell you, after a week of the elliptical you'll want to do some other things!
I'd suggest too, some classes, get a class schedule and see what's offered, they offer some great ones now at your local gym. Kickboxing,tae bo, belly dancing, the works! You can also get some dvd's to do at home on the days you don't want to do the elliptical or the bike, this would be even better, to mix it up and do it all.
Any and all of the above will work for these areas, be prepared to lose everywhere too, as spot reducing is a myth! Hope this helps.....
