You have to send your passport to the passport office along with a renewal application and two new photos. If you ned the renewal in a hurry you can ask for (and pay for) expedited service both ways and get it returned to you in about two weeks. Check the US passport office site below, you can get the application online.

They probably offer renewal by mail depending on your status. I would call them first and get the facts. If you don't want to travel all the way down to their main office, many local post office offer passport processing. Just look on-line for a list of locations. Remember to take the photos ahead of time before your visit.
