There is no such thing as a truly hypoallergetic dog. All dogs have dander. Some dogs shed more then others so yes take a look at low-shedding dogs. But the best thing to do is get a good air purifying machine. It will help keep dust and dander from people AND dogs out of the air and will help your kids to breathe easier.
* Chinese Crested (Powder Puff)
* Poodles (all sizes)
* Schnauzers (all sizes)
* Portuguese Water Dog
* Bichon Frise
* Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier
* Coton de Tulear
* Kerry Blue Terrier
* West Highland White Terrier
* Bedlington Terrier
these are all excellent examples of low shedding dogs

I have asthma and allergies, and 2 Bichon Frise. Purebreds can be expensive, around $600 to $900 but you know what you are getting. You can look online for rescue groups, and find dogs that way. They are demanding, they need more grooming than most, and like more attention than most dogs, but they are kind, gentle and loving. We considered Poodles as well, but sometimes you find a poodle with an attitude or high energy and that was not what we were looking for. Google Bichon Frise forums and you should be able to find plenty of great information.

I would look into poodle mixes, and other dogs that have hair, rather than fur. Also, I would go to www.petfinder.com to look for a dog.
You can find one that is an adult, has some basic manors, and would be good with kids. If you get a puppy, you won't be sure of what you are getting, and could potentially get a dog that isn't what you want.

You should stay away from Dalmations because as they grow older they have a membrane that makes them go blind and are mean to kids.The best I would say is a smaller dog.I personally have a rottweiler and he is a big cuddly baby but knows if your in trouble he will stand up and fight for you.It is all really about how they treat the dog how they will turn out.

There are poodle crosses that don't shed and you might want to look into Basenjis (African Barkless Dogs). It's not the pet people are allergic to...it's a dried form of their saliva called dander.

Poodles don't shed. That should help.
It's great that you want to get your kids a dog.
If you have need any more help you should consult your vet or a dog book.
