I had gum surgery about a year ago. It was totally worth it, i always had gum inflammation and my teeth were really small. they numbed my mouth than used a knife and cut the excess gum, there is also the laser way. Yes, i was really sore for a while after, but i would not take it back, in a year i am having my bottom gums done! If you go through with it....what do u have to lose....just some gum and you can notice a difference your smile is brighter and people really notice! After you get it done your gums will never go back to the same size, contact your dentist for more information. All i know is when ever i went to the dentist they always bothered me about how my gums were big but after i had the gum surgery, they haven't bothered me! :) If you want more info email me at TinaGirlcj298@yahoo.com

If you need it done you need to do it. I presume you are seeing a periodontist. There are a few different types of gum surgery and your periodontist will decide which ones will help you the most. The most common is a flap surgery in which they actually flap up the tissue so they can actually see the roots of the teeth, so they can remove all the calculus and any abnormal root features. They then suture the gum tissue back down. After healing the tissue will shrink up to a healthy level and will be easier for you to keep clean at home (but of course you need to see the hygienist and dentist at usually 3 month appts).
There are other types of surgeries including lasers where there is much less bleeding and no sutures. This is a newer technique that is gaining popularity, long term results haven't been seen yet though.
Surgery is very effective, as long as you keep up with your end of things, maintaining recommended recare visits and excellent home care.
I am sure your periodontist can give you all types of information on the treatment he or she recommends. Just ask!

I had to have it years ago, at the time they used like a wood burning iron, and burned my gums off! It was painful at the time, but I'm glad I did it. I'm sure now they have more modern methods, and alot quicker, I'll bet they use the laser, and you'll probably hardly have any down time. I'm glad I had it, it saved my gums, and they've been healthy all these years afterward, go for it!
