Brainwahing is why.
Some people actually believe that you can't be a good person outside of their belief SYSTEM (of control).
Believe what you know to be true in your heart and BRAIN.
Don't forget to use that last one!
If you are confused by a "holy book", try something new. Don't dwell on what you don't (or can't) know. Don't believe everything you see and hear. Worry about what you can do to help others.
Be a kind, compassionate person. Have good will in your heart, especially when you don't want to. Remember that we are all people even if some people are dumb. As you live your life, certain things will begin to make sense, if you let yourself see.

I think that a large percentage of the population is confused, they're just not that comfortable expressing their views. Religion is a sticky subject, and hard to broach without finding a landmine or two. Faith is deeply personal, and people's feelings get hurt if you don't see things their way. I was picked on in high school for being agnostic, just because I lived in the Southern holy rollin' bible belt. I wouldn't be concerned with what 'they' think about you. You have to find something that you're comfortable with, that makes you feel fulfilled and moved spiritually. Maybe you're a Buddhist... maybe a Methodist.... but you are ultimately the one who has to figure out what is best for your soul. And, despite your request, I have to throw this out there. The bible has that blurb about judging not, lest ye be judged. Remind those nice people of that the next time they're busting your chops or labeling you.
PS. I became Catholic.

I think that a person should not be branded as an atheist. People who do should not. If a person does not agree with the Scriptures they are either in denial, confused, misinformed, not interpreting the Scriptures correctly, or they just plian refuse to believe. For some answers you may have to have Scriptures but they should be presented to you in a way that will make the answer clearer, not confusing.

Atheists do not believe in any gods, most believe in scietifical or logical things, (for example, the theory of evolution). So if you aren't sure what you believe in, then you aren't atheist. If you FOR SURE do not believe in any supernatural/superior being such as a god or whatnot, then you are atheist. Whoever says otherwise is just stupid, I guess, to be nice about it. (By the way, I'm not atheist, but I'm searching for a religion, because I'm not sure what I believe in right now.)

You know, I don't know to tell you the truth. I have noticed that too though, and I am religious but just disagree with them and they think I am such a bad person or something. I guess it is that some people think that they are better than someone else because they think they have all the answers when in reality they don't.

If you are confused you are probably better off talking to people an more of a one on one basis. Unfortunately, people in general have a tendency to assume things, especially on message boards because all we have to go on is a few sentences. Let me know if you want to talk though.

Because outspoken Christians would much rather rebuke you than treat you like an equal and people on this forum would much rather anger you by taking everything you say out of contest that to just let you come in here and discuss the topic sensibly and in peace.

well I believe in God I just don't believe in any church or religion, and I don't think God is going to be upset with me if I don't want to be labeled, I can just be me, as long as I have a moral conscience, I think he's fine with that

The only one true religion is theirs! And if you don't get it, they'll thump you on the head with their book and call you names. We kindly refer to them as "Bible Thumpers". They're everywhere, & they say they won't stop until we're all like them! That'll never happen!
