Hi! It's been a long while since I've been to Harlem (my husband lived on 133rd and Edgecombe, a block from St. Nicholas Ave.), but the area is changing significantly as a great number of people are buying up properties left and right. As for 157th and St. Nicholas Ave., that area is still pretty okay, and you can easily get a subway on 155th Street, I think either the C train (which is the local version of the A train), and the B & D lines, all of which go downtown, are in the area also. As with anywhere in any big city, there are good and bad sections, and you just have to know how to handle yourself and not take unnecessary chances. Check out the website for the NYC transity authority, or this website which tells all about what's in Harlem. I always enjoyed going to City College and sitting on their campus over the weekends, quiet and peaceful. You're also not far from Broadway which is ALWAYS hopping.

PS... By the way, I am white, and have NEVER felt unwelcome or threatened whether I walked through Harlem with my Ghanaian husband or alone. It is certainly no longer an all black neighborhood, but has a good melting pot of races there.
