Let's say you are walking into a mall and there are double doors...?

there is someone in front of you who holds the door open, but is still infront of you. The same thing happens at the second door.
So do you say thanks after the first time, second time, or for both?

I usually say thanks both times, but it is awkward. But it's better to be on the safe side!

I say "Thank you!" and then "Thanks again" but the second time, I lower my voice because honestly as you said, it IS quite awkward.

You could wait until the second door but I definitely suggest after BOTH doors, because there's an off chance that the 2nd door won't be opened and you will have missed your opportunity to say thanks for the first door.

I play it safe and say it both times. I always wonder if i should have waited and said it only once

I say it for both. the first time you should say it cause if it was me and you didnt say thanks I wouldnt hold the second one open for you. So say something like wow thanks then the second time you could say arent you a gentlemen or arent you sweet thanks a bunch sweetie. or run in front and try to pull it open for them and say now its your turn... then again this is just my personality but do what works for you

Mostly, I say it both times. However, do whatever you feel comfortable with. By saying thank you at all you are showing respect and gratitude.

I even thank the cash machine when it gives me my money.

Well, you have to say thanks the first time, since there is no guarantee there will be a second time. But when it happens again, a simple "And thanks again" ought to do the trick.
