Reiki itself is based on meditation.
I should start by saying that there are thousands of different styles of reiki out there today, with many new versions literally being invented daily. Many of these new styles of reiki have little to do with reiki - being combined and mixed with a lot of new age parlance.
The reiki that we know today was started by a man named Mikao Usui, who was teaching a spiritual / philosophical system that incorportaed hand healing as part of its teachings. The system that he used was called Usui Reiki Ryoho. This IS the original version of Reiki.
This system of Reiki was based on meditation, called Gassho (meaning 'hands coming together'). As a student, one has to master Gassho before moving onto other practices.
I would have to say that if you want a good instruction manual on meditation and Reiki, try Frank Petters books. He has done much to bring the facts about Reiki to the Reiki community, dispelling many myths and half-truths that are so common in todays Reiki world.
I would recommend staying far away from D. Steins book "Essential Reiki". It is grossly inaccurate when compared with historically valid research and information. Lots of stuff made up to support the new age approach to Reiki.
Be cautious of books that talk about chakras, crystals, wands, angels/spirit guides, etc.. . These are all new age things that have very little to do with Japanese Reiki, and have been introduced to Reiki within the past 10 years or so.
Hope this helps, good luck on your journey.

Hands of light is a really great book, it will explain scientific Reiki, and will show you a way to work it. Meditation is a way you can control you thoughts, clear your mind, and heal it. so Reiki is a way to heal you body by balancing the energy in the chakaras (wheels of motion) when this energies are balanced you can reach a wellness in your body, mind and soul. Mediation will help you in this process so you can actually feel this energy flowing trough your body, and eventually see it. good luck and god bless.

The best reiki instruction manual is found INSIDE another human being who practices reiki. The best meditation is to search around and find the one that works best for you. They are many ways to meditate, all constructed to suit the sitter. Perhaps you can find your own?

The only benefit from Reiki is to the practitioner as they cash your cheque. It's new age nonsense...there are no healing energies or chakras. The only other people who benefit from so-called-alternative-medicine (SCAM) are those who have nothing seriously wrong in the first place.
