Dear Crissy, I believe that all things in life would be best approached by starting with awareness, including finding solutions to problems, so I'm going to start by trying to make you aware of things I think will help.
First, I don't believe you totally want to give up yet, or you wouldn't be asking other Yahoo! readers for their opinions. That's not an accusation, that's pointing out a good thing! Some part of you at least wants to survive! Be aware of that and hold on to it.
Now, you'll probably agree that what you think affects your mood, but believe it or not, your mood can also affect what you think! I found that out the hard way! If you're angry, you'll think of all the things that make you angry, or that there are around you to be angry about. And so it goes if you're sad, or happy. So don't be fooled by your mood! Don't let 'em pull the wool over your eyes.
Feelings are a guide to what's going on in your life, treat them as that, instead of letting them rule you! Now a wee bit about that, which I heard a psychologist say, and it seemed to work for me.
1. When you get a strong feeling, be aware of it, admit to yourself that it's there, and name it; e.g. jealousy, anger, joy, etc.
2. Allow yourself to feel this emotion instead of fighting it, and be aware of how it feels. Note, we're just dealing with feelings here, not the thoughts or events that triggered them, so it could be a feeling of grief, but never mind that it was caused by a bereavement yet. This step may be like going on a rollercoaster: it may not be pleasant, but it will come to an end. Your body won't tolerate any one feeling for too long, at worst you'd fall asleep from exhaustion ( though it's unlikely to come to that ).
3. Once you can think clearly, you can then go on to what caused the problem, and what you're going to do about it (and that could be enlisting other people's help).
Practise this regularly, as it will get easier to do.
Now we need a long-term solution to deal with problem once and for all, and one or two short-term ones to help you cope in the meantime. First the short-term: take a look at the books I list in "Sources", and read about Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). You may find articles about that in unlikely places, e.g. articles on mental training in sports, health or fitness mags.
Look up NeuroLinguistic Programming (NLP) in books, etc., and make sure any practioners can trace their training to John Grinder and Richard Bandler, the creators of NLP.Now long term, go easy on yourself, as you're probably your own worst critic (join the club!), and you've obviously been through a rough time. Don't make yourself feel worse than life already does. Imagine how you'd advise a friend in you shoes. Find people you trust to confide in, e.g. your doctor, a priest, your best friend or your Mum, and let them help share the load. If your in Britain, try the Samaritans - they're trained to help you cope with strong feelings; elsewhere in the world, I don't know, but perhaps the telephone operator could direct you to a telephone counselling service. Scribble every solution you can possibly think of on paper, no matter how whacky; you may come up with a good one!
Look again at what you love in life, things you enjoy or did enjoy doing, and consider doing them again. Think about what you'd like to do in life, and how to bridge the gap between here and there.
Be patient; the strongest instinct known to humankind is the instinct to survive; nurture yours!
Remember the words of Cathaginian General Hannibal "We will find a way, or we will make one."
Find people to help you, like counsellors or psychologists, or even someone who may be best placed to deal with problems like yours. Best of luck Crissy, and when you're feeling better, write back and let us all know.

Know that you are loved, even if it's someone you don't know (like me). Write a list of all the things you DO have to be grateful for. Write a list of the things you like to do. Write a list of your family and friends. That list tells you who would be hurt if you didn't go on. Pray. Call a friend. Call a hospital. Call 211 and ask for suicide hot line. Know that everyone you leave behind will think that they did something or could have done something to help or stop you from feeling this way. There are many people out there who will be happy to help you! REACH OUT! No one can help if you don't tell someone how you feel.

Find the strength, somewhere somehow. Get lost in music. Get some 5-element acupuncture. It helped me.
Read Desiderata till you believe it. Explore the darkness that is, one day there will be light at the end of the tunnel.
Avoid the medical establishment as such ... the first loyalty of the pharmaceutical companies is not the patient but their share holders.
Take care 'n' be lucky

Ps: I forgot the sleep ... lots of it, it helps pass the time when all else fails ;-) x

I honestly do get like that. I just feel like it would be so much easier to just let go. So, I have learnt to do just that though not in the way that I feel like. I revert to doing nothing and close my eyes and be quiet. I tell myself that I am shutting down now and let my mind, my hurt, my despair, my tiredness and myself heal. It may sound strange though when I do this I stop caring at that moment in time and when I stop caring the problems and feelings die away as they have nothing to hold onto.
I know that this is not a long term answer though when you get like that you need something that is just going to get you through that moment in time moment by moment.
That is what I do when I get the URGE to give up COMPLETELY.
Although at the time your emotions will not allow you to feel the reality of a way forward - there always is one! I hope this helps you.

When I feel low and most of us do at sometime in our lives - I make a list of all my problems and then another list of all the good and positive things in my life and its always amazing the positive side always wins. Also rise early one morning say 5am when the sun is rising and the air is clean and clear and just breath it all in and tell yourself that your'e OK and you don't know the meaning of the word NO and FAILURE - and just keep fighting those negative thoughts - tell them you don't need them -tell them to GO AWAY. You'll succeed - you'll be ok. I'll think of you in my prayers xx

Like the words of the song "When you're sure you've had enough of this life, well hang on
Don't let yourself go, 'cause everybody cries and everybody hurts sometimes".

Its part of life - maybe you need to re-set your brain ... go and try something completely new and meet some new people.

Peace out

Sounds like you are suffering from depression go and see a doctor as soon as possible. Explain the way you feel to him/her and they will prescribe medication. Be patient though it could be a long road to a full recovery.
