It is definitely NOT the cross. As there were MONO-thiestic religions WAY before they wrote the bible. Before that didn't christians use that little fish? That's what I heard.
It shouldn't be a Jewish symbol, either because they aren't supposed to use symbols (graven images & idolatry). Actually the christians shouldn't either, right?
I would say some really old Messopotamian thing. Zaostrianism, maybe?

statuetes of mother figures have been found in the fertile crescent that are over 5,000 years old.these are the oldest definete religuios symbols,but some belive cave paintings have religious funtion,making the oldest holy symbol even older.

While the person who answered "The Sabbath" had a good idea, that is a time period and not an object.
The rabbis I think would say it was Abraham's circumcision that was first. But that would not go over well if you were looking for an object to hang around your neck!
