To be English... to look down on the Welsh and Scotch (sic), to invade the Irish, to hark on about the invasion of half the world, to drink beer, to love football (not me tho), to have a slightly hoighty attitude to the rest of Europe, to kiss American bottoms, to use words like hoighty and bottom, the BBC, to embrace lots of different cultural foods and have nothing of our own to shout about, to have long springs and autumns and short winters and summers, Wimbledon, traffic jams on Bank Holidays, bad chocolate (although with free salmonella!), late trains, ex-hooligans, wonderful literature, royalty, the best music on the earth, a drugs 'problem', democracy, strawberries and cream, and a belief that it's a good idea to call somewhere 'Ashby-de-la-Zouce'. I'm very proud to be English to the core.

I'm with you, we Brits have many reasons to be proud of ourselves, not least our resliance through difficult times, for example:
WW2 bombing raids on Britain were a rough time but that didnt put a dent in our stiff upper lip.
Another June 1996 Manchester IRA bombing, not one person dead but hundreds injured, stangers became friends and helped each other through the tradegy of the day (a sort of symbol of this is the post box where the bomb went off stands strong and true without a scratch while all else around was chaos and devistation).
More recently London 7/7 - again the British public were targeted in a horrific attack, this time hundreds died and plenty more were injured and again, stangers turned to each other for help on the streets and again they were met with open arms by people scrambling to help
My point being? Well although to outside eyes the Brits may seem cold, stern, unwelcoming and heartless but really deep down inside we know in times of trouble or times of need, we dont even need to ask and our own country men and women will be by our side ready and willing.
I would also like to add the fact that the British Army is the most reslient and find easy to cope in any climate. Why? Just look at our weather, on Monday we can have an Indian summer and we all love it, Tuesday will be a monsoon, we just get out our brollies and raincoats and by the start of the next week we could be 4ft in snow but still we will dig ourselves out, defrost the car and trudge to work so no wonder our soldiers find easy to adapt! Just recently in the news the Army was commended for getting together, training & perfecting an army in the middle of a parched desert!!
OK we may moan and complain about the weather but that is because there is no consistancy (we can have all 4 seasons in a week) but we cope and we get on with it!

What makes us quintessentially English is the ability to use words like quintessentially without sounding pretentious.
And of course TEA
I would rather give up ANYTHING else, I can't face the day til I've had at least a pint on tea - spread over two mugs of course...
Ooooo and eccentrics!!
NOBODY does eccentricity like the English!

I schooled in UK and R O Ireland had history from both sides of the fence, from kevin barry to king henry viii,
and I really love UK as well as R O Ireland,
I think it is the British Empire that is quintessentially English.
holds a great status for what is quite a small Island.

That we're a tiny country, yet have managed to be so influential in the world - whether it be brave, tough - fierce or cold-bloodedly ruthless, it's just astounding what such a small nation has managed.
Everyone seems to have an opinion on us - whether they like us or hate us we still do not shy away.
Mind you, with all the toughest fighters and victorious, conquering armies from half of Europe invading and settling in the UK during the past 2000 years, is there any wonder England is a melting pot of tough, determined, and fierce people? XD

Well firstly there is no such thing as a true English person.
Even the queen is of German decent, Philip is Russian decent..... we were invaded by Rome to name but 1.
I myself am Scottish, English and Irish and I'm sure if you go back in your family tree you will not be pure English, Why ? cos there is no such thing, we are and have always been a population created by other nationalities.
However I think England should be a country to be proud of to live in, because of our multicultural society.

England has a history of success which makes English people rate it above other country's. Because of the empire many of us were and still are brought up to be very patriotic.
England has won nearly all its wars since 1066. It is still a country which has beautiful country'side, great footballers, fish and ships and still helps other countrys.

i feel pround to be considered english because 17 looks like an n and g looks like a 9 and my birthday is was 17.9 and I is h is how the julian calendar describes my arm. MARCH APRIL MAY which read with understanding P=DI stitched together and M=IVI stitched together. but i hate code cause it gets people killed who can't keep quiet. And in this point in time the Sax-Coberg? (i apoligize for misspelling) house that rules ENGLAND is a german house i read somewhere. but i appreciate the english especially cause one day they might say i had german roots too but wouldnt have been pure enough to join the ruling party in the 1930's. And no slarvery is said to be allowed in the U.K. although they can't seem to stop broadcasts into my head.

Complaining about how crap the rest of the world are, and how great England is at everything. All the while driving Japanese cars, drinking German beer, eating turkish kebabs & watching a widescreen tv made in China.
