Because:
What is the Imacculate Conception supposed to mean?
(NOT A VIRGIN BIRTH! - betcha)
Jesus, the basis of Christianity? .
If Jesus died, he could NOT have been God.
Gods do not die? Do they?
If Jesus 'died' on Friday and 'undied' on Sunday, what else besides Saturday was sacrificed?
Did Jesus give up Saturday for us? Big deal!
If Jesus died for our sins, there should not be any more sins, else why go through with it?.
If Jesus really DIED, he should be dead, dead, dead!
If you swallow this stuff, you are not going to like the folks who don't. You want them to swallow it too.
They want everyone to convert to their non-thinking.

Yeah that would be nice huh? If we got to be treated equally, but they don't even have a non believers chat section either, so... But it's a nice example of general typical prejudice of us...
Though if we did, believers would probably want to come and over run it anyhow with trying to evangelize people.
Why do people come to this section? Because what people believe or don't is equally a big part of life and personal identity. We are just as interested in our side as you are of yours. (And has nothing to do with hoping something will change us, that is just your hope...)
And if you want to know why atheists make fun of religion? It's no different then other races making fun of whites, the poor making fun of the rich, and so on. People that do and have had to deal with prejudice or lesser treatment tend to do that, and non believers are no different. And the internet provided a voice for the 90% that would never say anything in person, so yeah it sees more of it.

A separate section won't fix anything. Some Atheists will still go to the religion section to harass believers and Some Religious people will still go to the athiest section to harass Atheists.
And for the Atheists who have to make snotty comments on Christian questions & lectures, there are just as many Christians who make snotty comments on Atheist questions.
The answer is that there are just immature people out there, on both sides.

Imagine for a moment there was a Santa section in which people did nothing but discuss Santa, how great he was and how he was going to give them nice presents this year for being good. These people then debated as to the specific virtues of each of the magic reindeer, or the elves in the work shop. Such people would be subject to ridicule by a lot of intelligent free thinking people.
Yet here in this section there are people trying to debunk science (despite using science by being online), insult atheists, insult people with different religious opinions, write hate speak about gay people, impose their moral beliefs on others etc. These same people then make outrageous claims about a magic person who invented everything, created everything, and is watching over us all knowing what we are all doing and thinking for every nanosecond of every day throughout the infinity of time. Their outrageous claims of the supernatural, a close minded belief in magic, defense of a book most of them have never read, and a judgmental holier than thou attitude to others makes them the object of ridicule.

We don't come to necessarily make fun of religion. It is to challenge religious dogma and to open discussions for debates about religion and spirituality.
Belief. Non-belief. Both have to do with religion and spirituality.
I might agree with you but Yahoo needs Philosophy section, not about the Atheism section. After all, we just couldn't have fun without you good, righteous people throwing numbers and verses at us, then telling us we sin, praying for us... Sorry... Oh, I hope you can forgive me for saying that... I'll just cry if you don't.
That's it. Short, but not so sweet. Blah!

I think the question should really be, Why do atheists come to a section about Religion & Spirituality at all?
I think they come here because they are all a little agnostic, and are hoping to find some evidence that God exists, who he is, and what a believer should do.

Atheists do that because it is an important part of their religion --making fun of the religious attitude and beliefs.
Properly speaking, there is no honest religion section without atheists and their comments.

It is part of their job description to DISCREDIT, ridicule and make fun of "something" that escapes them altogether... Otherwise, they have NOWHERE ELSE to go, and no other tree to bark on. Get it??
Atheists have been around forever and they will be here to stay until the very end of times... They shall never find peace.
Hopefully, in the course of human events, there will come a point when there will exist --even for a brief period-- some certain, DECENT DIALOGUES between opposing points of view on this age-old topic.
Peace be with you!

I agree with you, atheists *should* have their own board. For one thing, it's just annoying when atheists come here and attack people of faith. It doesn't make any sense, but as someone once said, "People always laugh at what they do not understand." Not verbatim, but you get the idea.
Keep in mind also, that what an atheist says when they attack a person of faith, especially Christians it seems, is said out of ignorance concerning the things of God. Not stupidity, but ignorance. Big difference. Many atheists have become Christians: Lee Strobel, Carman, and John Newton, the man who wrote "Amazing Grace, just to name a few.
I, for one, am learing not to take their vicious comments so seriously or personally. I just think to myself what Jesus said on the cross as he was dying for our sins: "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." The more I see just how lost this world is, the more compassion I feel for them.

How can someone make fun of religion if he doesn't visit the religion section?
That's similar to suggesting people should go to a bar to listen to a sermon.

Listen, this is the 'Religion & Spirituality' section, not only a 'Religion' section. It doesn't only belong to theists.
We atheists are free to post wherever we want.
