Set up a visit to the school before the first day. Show him where his class is, where he will eat lunch, and where the playground is. Many school districts also can get you in touch with a local play group so he can get to know a few of the kids that will be in his grade.

Since I don't know exactly what type of school it is or where, I'd go up to the school when it is not in session either on weekends or after the regular day and I'd play with my child on the playground. I'd try to make the school as familiar a place as possible so when you have to make the transition the child will be familiar with the building and the equipment.
In addition, if you can gain access to the building ask the principal or school counselor for a tour.
Lastly, I'd play "school" at home with your child, sometimes with them as the teacher and sometimes with you as the teacher and see how your child responds and reacts in the different roles.
Good luck.

Most elementary schools have it set up so kindergardeners go half days for a few days at the beginning of the year. While it will be crazy for your child, it will help ease him/her into independence. I agree with another person who answered in that a visit to the school to meet the principal and teacher might be good. Most school systems still have open house night for this. Check with your school. If not, I'd do a visit anyway. Speaking from a teacher's point of view, it wouldn't hurt.

Talking about it a lot really helps, explain what school is like, how long they are going to be there, and that they are coming right home afterwards. The worst thing you can do is attend the class with them. It will be hard to let go but once you leave they stop crying and start having fun!!

You can't prepare him. It's a totally new experience and it will be a shock no matter what. The best thing you can do is try not to coddle him and push him to take risks and be outgoing with people. Kindergarten is a fine time to start learning how to deal with immature people.

Put a pic. of you/family in his pocket and instruct him to only take it out during recess or snack.
If that can't be done, then kiss the inside of his hand (palm) and tell him that when he starts to miss you, to put his hand on his check.
Let your child discover that he/she is getting big now and that you are soooo proud of them. Encourage him/her that they are going to have sooo much fun. Tell him/her that you will be right back and that it's going to be a-okay.
If you are a praying parent, pray over your child, just keep speaking encouragement and excitement in there life.
Kiss the palm-

the best is to find which kids in the new school- you already know: from last year, from the neighborhood. or, find a new friend from the new school, and start meeting with him after noon for a few weeks before your kid starts the new school. if he will have a friend with him, he will feel secure and happy in the new school. good luck.

he'll be fine. I went into kindergarten not knowing a word of english. I managed. I just went around telling everyone to go away in my language. So if you tell him there's nothing scary and not that much can really happen wrong and to go out there and make learning his priority he'll do fine.

Take the child to day care. Let them know it's ok to be w/o parents around. They also learn that they will be around other children, and that everything will be alright. The child will be upset the first few time. My daughter begs me to go to day care now, she starts kindergarden next year!!

Visit the school BEFORE his first day. Take him there also when no one is around to see the school and play there if you can.
Also see if there is a day that kids get to meet the teacher before school starts.
