I just answered this in another question. My beloved Pit Bull attacked two of my grand children without any provocation from the kids. The one kid was sitting at a table eating and the other kid was walking from one room to another and not even looking at the dog. Thank God my dog was still on his leash or one of those children could have been attacked and maybe killed.
In all the pet books on Pits they show you how to unpry their locked jaws if this should happen. So, what does that tell you?

My dog had more attention and love than most kids. He slept in my bed every night. He sat at the table and ate dinner with us and had his nightly bowl of ice cream. He had every toy made. He was my love! BUT, for no reason he attacked one day. I had nightmares about what could have happened if he had not had his leash attached.

A greatness of a nation and it's moral progress can be judged by the way it's animal are treated: Mahatma Gandhi. We fail.
Because some outlaws can pay off people the torture and killing of dogs are allowed just becasue they are pit bulls. They are beaten, straved, hung, fought, set on fire with little for those who do it to worry about. The there are those stupid people who say they are dangerous dogs and should be wiped out as a breed because they have allowe the media to brain wash them. Out of 56 deaths due to dog attacks only 3 were pit bulls. It is big news if a pit bull attacks someone so when a pit is idebtfied as the attacker very little is done to find out if it is ture. The CDC,ASPCA and 100's of animal control departments as said that nearly 50% of the people who say the attacker was a pit is wrong. Pits are used in serach and rescue, police dogs, drug dogs, theropy dogs and working handiacp dogs. W. Wilson and T. Roovselt owed pits while in office. The dog that work with Helen Keller was a pit. G. Patton, Fred Aster and Jack DEmpeys owned pits. The frist dog to get a medal of honer was a pit bulls mix. These dogs were known as the nanny dogs becasue of thier love for childern. AS the OUR GANG KIDS played across the movie and tv screen thier loving dog Petey was a pit and the grand champion of the EKC is APBT. Maybe you should do some homework. I well be glad to give some wen pages to go to

Any dog can be dangerous. It depends on how you raise them and what you're requiring them to do. Even a Pomeranian can do some serious damage to your face if you get close enough or tease him. But, it's true that many insurance policies will not cover you if you have Pit Bulls, German Shepherds, Huskies, Rotweillers, and Dobermans in your home. It's because many who own them raise them to protect their property, giving the dogs a bad rep. I used to raise German Shepherds, so I know first-hand that not every dog had the same personality. Any dog can be dangerous, when pushed hard enough. Some don't even have to be pushed at all. If they think their home or master are being invaded, they can be dangerous. People who own dogs must be very careful when they're around other people, even other family members. I now own a Sheltie, and though very shy, she does snap when small children try to touch her face. She just doesn't like it. Shelties aren't a breed you think about when you think of something dangerous. But, I won't allow my grandson to play with her, knowing what I know. Animals, in general, are unpredictable, and all can be dangerous, in some manner. As an animal owner, you have the responsibility to protect them, and protect others from them as well. As long as you're doing your part, I don't see any reason why you can't own any animal that you want. <*)))><

Some breeds are naturally more agressive than others. And furthermore, people sometimes deliberately breed animals to accentuate such aggression. Whilst this might be handy in a guard-dog it's a horror story in a pet.

Quite why anyone would be attracted to such an aggressive breed is beyond me - it probably says something about the owner - re confidence issues etc - same as feeling the need to own a Hummer when you live in the city!

I'm adding a footnote to this post as some of the other answers have really horrified me.

It is a fact that certain breeds are more aggresive than others - it is not just down to the owner, or standard of training (though both of these can excacerbate the problem). If you are a lover of this breed I can understand you wanting to defend them, but you are giving out misinformation when you claim they are not necessarily more aggressive than other types of dogs.

Some aren't, I've seen a couple of softy pit bulls, lots of people don't even realise what a pit bull looks like and so they get blamed for other dogs dangerous behaviour, there was a question about pit bulls a couple of months ago, with a link to a site showing different dogs and you had to pick the pit bull, but I forget the site.

Any dog can be dangerous. Some just have mean personalities but usually a dangerous dog is created by their owner or lack of. I own two pit bulls and they are the most friendly dogs I have every seen.

Are people ever going to realize they have a higher chance of getting killed by their parents or struck by lightening that get killed by a Pit Bull?

To martinamagrace - your very own answer to your question is right there in the 2nd paragraph of your posting. Dogs should NOT be treated like children, to do so is asking for trouble. Many dog problems stem from the fact that people think their dogs are 'furbabies' and treat them as such.

pit bulls are dangerous but then so is the passive dog you own right now.. i know of several instances where a little poodle was with a family for years then all of a sudden attacks its owner. remember dogs were crossed at one time with wolves.. they do have their natural instincts still there. i think pit bulls can be a good dog but if the wrong type of person has it thats the problem. you never buy a dog you cant handle.. remember that. psy

Pits are not dangerous if they are raised right. My friend has three of them and they are all great with the kids and with her cats. Any dog can be dangerous if not treated well. I think pits have a bad name simply because they were bread to fight and when a pit bites it does damage unlike a smaller dog who may just as prone to biting but the bite is less severe.

Pit bulls are not dangerous, it is the way they are brought up, any dog, no matter what type, can be made vicious. Ive bred pitbulls in the past and not one of my dogs had a vicious bone in its body, in fact, I had one that would nudge my baby back into a sitting position if he fell over.
I have known pugs that have been more vicious and nasty.
Yes pitbulls have been known to attack, but if you look carefully alot of the attacks have been provoked, or the dog was defending its territory or owner.
If a dog is vicious, look to its owner, a dogs not born bad its made bad.
Pitbulls, staffies and mastiffs are the most loyal and intellegent and humorous dogs Ive known.
