Compensation is when a person is always looking for others to affirm their goodness, they are self seeking. They tend to have lower self esteem levels & need to hear from others that they are loved & needed & do good things. Regression is when something you don't want to remember (block out) that remains in your subconscious until you either remember something or you seek the attention of a Dr. to help you remember. Rationalization is when people make up stories, lies, excuses & so forth to acommadate their problem. Ex: a drinker will say "Oh my 16 year old son stresses me out all the time from his bad behavior, that's why I drink", instead of accepting his/her responsibility for his/her problem. Displacement is when you "lose yourself" so to say. Ex: after a woman has been raped she puts herself into another world to forget or not believe it has happened. It's kinda like putting your mind & body in another place where they aren't really at. Projection is when you throw your problems onto other people. If you have issues with your BF, you're always blaming issues on say his parents, they are too strict, & you let him & them know it. Or, if you have issues yourself, you let everyone & their brother know you have problems so they will feel bad for you, & help you out. It's kind of like the I'm the victim, help me syndrome. I hope that helps. Looking in professional journals can really help you out with these symptoms.

Try webmed.com for some good descriptions. If you are looking for descriptions for a particular purpose, like to claim disability benefits, apply for VA compensation or other things like that, www.vva.org is a good site. Those terms are common in many mental illness categories.
